Daily Devotional for May 30 , 2024 – It’s time to humble ourselves before God – and stop being “substantively mean!”

1 Peter 2:1-4
So get rid of your feelings of hatred. Don’t just pretend to be good! Be done with dishonesty and jealousy and talking about others behind their backs. Now that you realize how kind the Lord has been to you, put away all evil, deception, envy, and fraud. Long to grow up into the fullness of your salvation; cry for this as a baby cries for his milk.

Come to Christ, who is the living Foundation of Rock upon which God builds; though men have spurned him, he is very precious to God who has chosen him above all others.

I read an editorial column in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette this week from one of my favorite OpEd writers, John Brummett. He was talking about a potential Vice Presidential running mate, who he described as “less crazed and incompetent than he is substantively mean.”

We seem to have a lot of “substantively mean” people among us these days. These people pretend to be “good” – and they may really be smart, competent people. But such people will lie, cheat, and steal to get what they want – or to get things to go their way. They will say one thing to people in certain circles – and quite another elsewhere. Think of those “Christians” who say, “We love all people” while also claiming that certain people and groups are not welcome in their places of worship or church memberships. Or think of those who are all about a good “food drive” or mission fundraiser/trip…but they disparage the needy in their own backyards and even declare that some of them should “get a job and get off welfare!”

God has been so good to you and me. We live in an abundance of riches. Yes, there are those in our communities and neighborhoods who are less fortunate. And we must not speak and act in a way that attempts to elevate ourselves and widen the gap. God loves all of us…and His word and will are offered for every single person. This is something those in positions of leadership and political power would do well to remember. But I firmly believe the “movement” begins with you and me. We must set the example…we must start the process and demonstrate to others how to speak, act, and live in a way that glorifies God and His abundant love and blessings over our lives.

Peter is right…get rid of hatred. Stop being phony liars and cheaters. Quit being so critical of others and instead speak of the amazing love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness that God offers us all through the blood of Jesus Christ. In a nutshell, stop being “substantively mean.” God despises this! We cannot be selfish, arrogant witnesses and servants. We can do better – and we should! Ask God to show you where and how to be a humble, faithful servant today and to treat others as you wish to be treated, for the glory of His Kingdom. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for May 7, 2024 – Memes, tornadoes, and the glory of God…seeking His power and protection – and serving faithfully at all times

Psalm 19
The heavens are telling the glory of God; they are a marvelous display of his craftsmanship. Day and night they keep on telling about God. Without a sound or word, silent in the skies, their message reaches out to all the world. The sun lives in the heavens where God placed it and moves out across the skies as radiant as a bridegroom going to his wedding, or as joyous as an athlete looking forward to a race! The sun crosses the heavens from end to end, and nothing can hide from its heat.

God’s laws are perfect. They protect us, make us wise, and give us joy and light. God’s laws are pure, eternal, just. They are more desirable than gold. They are sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb. For they warn us away from harm and give success to those who obey them.

But how can I ever know what sins are lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. And keep me from deliberate wrongs; help me to stop doing them. Only then can I be free of guilt and innocent of some great crime.

May my spoken words and unspoken thoughts be pleasing even to you, O Lord my Rock and my Redeemer.

“We’re alive! “Thank God, we are alive!” – Joy King, Barnsdall, Oklahoma – May 7th, 2024

Around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6th, a devastating tornado (thought to be at least an EF3 or stronger) roared through Barnsdall, Oklahoma, a community of 1000 residents just southwest of Bartlesville (which also took a direct hit). I was watching on television as forecasters showed the undeniable “hook echo” of a tornado they projected to be as much as 1.5 miles wide bearing down on these northeast Oklahoma communities. Photos and videos today show neighborhoods that look like they were put into a blender and strewn over the countryside. I’ve seen lots of photos of tornado damage, but the miniscule size of much of this unrecognizable debris is astounding. At least one person is dead, and the search continues for those who are still missing.

Because of current technology, we can get an even closer view of tornadoes. Drones allow us to get “up close and personal” with the aftermath. I watched a video interview this morning with Barnsdall resident, Joy King, who rode out this storm in her cellar, which was located feet away from her house. She said that she waited about thirty minutes and decided to come out of the cellar, but her husband phoned from work, where he and others had just been warned to take cover. So, King stayed in the cellar – and the deadly tornado destroyed her home. She connected a chain on the cellar door to a bolt in the floor…and the wind ripped the chain loose and opened the door. King huddled with her dog in a corner of the cellar as debris swirled in and around. She thanked God that both she, her husband, and her dog are alive – but today, her cats are missing.

I have to admit that I have been frightened of tornadoes since I was a child – due largely to a childhood experience of my Grandmother Ramsey, who watched her aunt and uncle provide livery service to transport bodies of the dead and injured down her street after a horrific tornado on Thanksgiving Day 1926. Nineteen people died, and my grandmother’s aunt later recalled her clothing was covered in mud and blood when she returned home. Another tornado in March 1938 would claim at least three of my grandmother’s family members who lived on the outskirts of our community. As a child, I heard my grandmother and great-aunt recall the story of how one relative was impaled with a fence post. As I read the first lines of this Psalm, I thought about the “heavens” and the glory of God. And I wondered just how and where tornadoes fit into this declaration!

As an adult, I have a different perspective on these storms. Yes, they are often deadly and frequently destructive…and in the blink of an eye, they have changed countless lives forever. But often, after the storm passes, the skies are quite majestic as the sun returns and clouds linger to float by lazily. And for the record, I do not think for one minute that deadly storms are God’s wrath on “sinners.” I honestly do not understand why He allows such destruction. But I have noticed that more times than I can count, the comments afterward are like those of Joy King… “Thank God, we’re alive!”

I trust God completely. So far, there is nothing I have faced that He has not carried me through with undeniable presence and power. I have a healthy “respect” for tornadoes…but an even more serious reverence and awe for God’s commands and His power to both cover us in protection and care – and to wield justice when necessary. And I believe that there are times when God is sorely disappointed in my words and actions – especially as I claim to be His faithful, obedient servant.

Recently, someone made me aware of an ugly meme on Facebook that was clearly AI generated and made false statements and assumptions about two well-known people. Immediately, the comments flew as several looked straight past the note of many that this was AI generated – and took this for gospel and vehemently expressed outrage and disgust. I “unfriended” more than one of these people. There is no reason for me to associate with such evil – even in the context of “friends” on social media. To me, this sort of dishonesty and vile hatred grieves God to His very core…and you and I would do well to run away from it as fast as possible.

More storms are forecast for us in the coming hours. Quite frankly, more “storms” are on the horizon for us in every aspect of life. But as I look to the skies and watch the clouds float past – and at times “boil” and churn with darkness – I am reminded Who is in charge…and Who I am to always serve. Pick and choose your friends and associates well. Watch your words and actions. And trust God in everything. “We’re alive! Thank God, we are alive!”  May we live every minute of the day in a way that brings Him honor and glory. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for March 9, 2024 – It’s time to show others who you are and who you follow…it’s time to be like Jack!

Genesis 39:1-6a
When Joseph arrived in Egypt as a captive of the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased from them by Potiphar, a member of the personal staff of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Now this man Potiphar was the captain of the king’s bodyguard and his chief executioner. The Lord greatly blessed Joseph there in the home of his master, so that everything he did succeeded. Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph in a very special way. So Joseph naturally became quite a favorite with him. Soon he was put in charge of the administration of Potiphar’s household, and all of his business affairs. At once the Lord began blessing Potiphar for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs began to run smoothly, his crops flourished and his flocks multiplied. So Potiphar gave Joseph the complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. He hadn’t a worry in the world with Joseph there, except to decide what he wanted to eat!

In the last few days, I have discovered videos on social media of a little boy named Jack, who delivers opinions on everything from Pop Tarts to babies…to how quickly God answers our prayers. At best, Jack is OCD…a “clean freak” who keeps everything in order in his room, puts away one toy before playing with another – and declared his mother’s closet to resemble a “Messy Dollar General!” I don’t know exactly how old Jack is, but I would guess he is about five. He has a three-year-old sister named Emmalyn, and a baby brother named Hank, and they frequently appear in these videos with their big brother.

Jack’s grammar is comical…but he delivers his thoughts in an endearing, slow, Southern drawl that makes me smile – and laugh out loud at times. Jack’s following has grown so large that his parents have established everything from a “GoFundMe” and “CashApp” accounts for Jack’s college fund to t-shirts on Etsy that say, “A Messy Dollar General…That’s What You Look Like” and “Do you even know what a ‘jella’ bean is?” to a link to book Jack for a personal “Cameo” video greeting.

I feel like I know who Jack is…even regarding his faith and his love for his siblings and other family member and friends. I pray that all of this “celebrity” doesn’t affect Jack in a negative manner…that God will guide his parents to make wise decision – and guard Jack’s little heart along the way. But for now, I love watching the videos and laughing. Jack and his siblings bring me joy and hope…and sometimes, they even make me think!

The reason for sharing this with you is to say that I believe God has a big purpose for Jack and his siblings. But I also believe this for you and me. This passage in Genesis tells us that Potiphar readily recognized that the Lord was with Joseph in a special way. Do others know this about you? Do they see your faithfulness and obedience to God in action? Do your words speak of love, grace, mercy, kindness, forgiveness, courage, hope and joy? Like Jack, can you offer an opinion on why God doesn’t answer our prayers right away while making others want to continue to pray and trust God for His timing?

We all know the saying, “Life is not a dress rehearsal.” We often get one chance to make a good impression…and what we say and do in the first few minutes of an encounter with others may determine whether they see us as a humble, confident, genuine disciple of Christ…or they are confused about who we trust and serve – or what we truly believe. Too many of us are all over the map…and it’s time to establish our identity as a faithful servant of the Most High God and His Only Son, Jesus Christ.

It’s time to take a cue from a little boy named Jack who says, “Everybody can pray for somebody”…”We do not have time for a nap”…and “I have a lotta work to do.” We can let the world see the love of Jesus in our words and actions…or our lives can “Look like a messy Dollar General.” The choice is yours. I think I will try to be like Jack! Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for February 24, 2024 – Remember what God has done for you – and always aim to please 𝑯𝒊𝒎!

Deuteronomy 4:5-10
No other nation has laws that are as fair as the ones the Lord my God told me to give you. If you faithfully obey them when you enter the land, you will show other nations how wise you are. In fact, everyone that hears about your laws will say, “That great nation certainly is wise!” And what makes us greater than other nations? We have a God who is close to us and answers our prayers.

You must be very careful not to forget the things you have seen God do for you. Keep reminding yourselves, and tell your children and grandchildren as well. Do you remember the day you stood in the Lord’s presence at Mount Sinai? The Lord said, “Moses, bring the people of Israel here. I want to speak to them so they will obey me as long as they live, and so they will teach their children to obey me too.”

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

Yesterday, I “early voted” ahead of our state’s participation in the Super Tuesday primary on March 5.  Voting is a right and a privilege that I do not take lightly. I prayerfully considered each checkmark. I did my homework and researched the candidates. I did not vote “party politics,” and I didn’t choose candidates based on what I thought my friends would endorse. I fully understand that mine is only one vote…but I also know that every vote counts. So, I asked God to guide my decisions and help me vote as if my ballot was going to determine each outcome. And you should do this, too.

The second paragraph of this passage really spoke to me today…“You must be very careful not to forget the things you have seen God do for you.” Remember what God has done for you – not a person…not a church body…not your friends and family…GOD. Consider everything you do considering what He has done in your life…and how He is guiding you. I believe that many people know in their soul when God is telling them to speak and act in one way – even as they decide to go in a different direction. We must be very careful to always listen to God…and act as He directs.

The words of God in this passage also remind us that people.are.watching…your children are watching…your friends, neighbors and co-workers are watching. Your fellow believers are watching. And they are all asking, “Does this line up with what God says – and with the teachings of Jesus? Do these words and actions constitute love for all others, or are these the behaviors of someone who is self-centered, eager to fit in and be popular, and/or misinformed and spouting untruths?” When a person says, “I love Jesus,” or “I am a Christian,” and then he/she operates in name calling, disparagement of others, hatred, bigotry and bias, and dishonesty or playing fast and loose with the facts, people will question their sincerity, at best. Often, they will be left scratching their heads…and many will say, “If this is what it means to follow Jesus, I don’t want any part of it.”

The laws of God that Moses gave to us are still solid. God still reigns supreme…He is still close to us and answers our prayers. When we ask Him to guide and guard us, God will do this…in everything from our daily living to how to vote at the polling booth. It is time for us to choose Who we will truly serve, and listen to Him…not the world. We know what is right and true…and God does not look the other way when people sin and claim His authority. I tell you plainly, the only One we should aim to please is God. When we live, speak and act in His will, He will handle everything else. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for January 16, 2024 – Stanley cups and Christ’s commands…love is all that the Law demands…

Romans 13:8-10
Let love be your only debt! If you love others, you have done all that the Law demands. In the Law there are many commands, such as, “Be faithful in marriage. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not want what belongs to others.” But all of these are summed up in the command that says, “Love others as much as you love yourself.” No one who loves others will harm them. So love is all that the Law demands.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

Have you gotten your Stanley cup?  According to information at www.stanley1913.com …”The Stanley brand has a rich 100+ year history. Born from inventor William Stanley Jr. who forever changed the way hot drinks were consumed, in 1913 he fused vacuum insulation and the strength of steel in one portable bottle, inventing the all-steel vacuum bottle we know and love today.”

Zola got a Stanley cup for Christmas, and she was elated. I’ll be honest…I had no idea what this was, but apparently these insulated tumblers are all the rage. Hers has a handle and a pull-up spout for drinking, and our niece proudly tells us that beverages can stay cold in this cup for two days! Since Christmas, I have seen ads for Stanley cups everywhere…and they are touted to not only keep cold drinks cold – they will also keep a hot beverage hot. People are using them to hold soups, plastic containers of yogurt – and I even saw one ad for sticking a half-pint of ice cream in the cup to keep it frozen! This insulated drinking cup appears to singlehandedly “do it all!”

Paul is telling us that Christ’s command to “Love others as much as you love yourself” is somewhat the “Stanley cup” of commands. If we truly, fully keep this one directive, we essentially “cover all the bases” as faithful servants of the Most High God. Wondering what to do in any situation? Ask yourself if your words or actions will demonstrate love for the other person or group. If the answer is even remotely in the negative – change course! Before you speak or act, prayerfully consider how what you are about to do will line up with Christ’s command. Then make all necessary adjustments.

I will tell you, I’m a little dubious about the wonders of the Stanley cup. But I have absolutely no question that Christ’s command to love others as much as I love myself – and treat them as I want to be treated – is the perfect all-inclusive guide to following God’s Law. If love is my only debt, I want to be all but bankrupt! The GOOD NEWS is that I will never run out of love to share…God will see to this! So go ahead…I dare you to put this to the test! Love others as much as you love yourself – and treat them as you wish to be treated. Let this command be your “Stanley cup” – and let love be your only debt!  Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for December 21, 2023 – Cultivating our relationship with Jesus…it’s time for maintenance and mulching!

Isaiah 40:1-11
“Comfort, yes, comfort my people,” says your God. “Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and tell her that her sad days are gone. Her sins are pardoned, and I have punished her in full for all her sins.”

Listen! I hear the voice of someone shouting, “Make a road for the Lord through the wilderness; make him a straight, smooth road through the desert. Fill the valleys; level the hills; straighten out the crooked paths, and smooth off the rough spots in the road. The glory of the Lord will be seen by all mankind together.” The Lord has spoken—it shall be.

The voice says, “Shout!”

“What shall I shout?” I asked.

“Shout that man is like the grass that dies away, and all his beauty fades like dying flowers. The grass withers, the flower fades beneath the breath of God. And so it is with fragile man. The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God shall stand forever.”

O crier of good news, shout to Jerusalem from the mountaintops! Shout louder—don’t be afraid—tell the cities of Judah, “Your God is coming!” Yes, the Lord God is coming with mighty power; he will rule with awesome strength. See, his reward is with him, to each as he has done. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will carry the lambs in his arms and gently lead the ewes with young.

When Greg and I returned from our walk a couple of days ago, we marveled that the “Knockout Roses” in the flower beds next to our house are still producing buds! They have never bloomed so prolifically this close to Christmas, but the pink blossoms are truly beautiful. So, this year, we have lighted Christmas garlands hanging on the porch rails above pink flowering roses! But all too soon – maybe with the next freeze – the roses will indeed wither and fade for this season, and Greg will prune them back in preparation for next year’s blooms.

There is a lot of winter yard maintenance to be done each year…and Greg spends hours pruning and mulching in preparation for the upcoming warmer seasons. And while the word of God never withers or fades, we are called to nurture His message…not with pruning, but with “mulching” in the form of guarding our words and actions, and “fertilizing,” by sharing the Good News and teachings of Jesus with others.

The “reward” will come in the form of God’s mighty power…His guidance and guardianship…and His promise of Eternal Life. The image presented in the last verses of this passage bring me joy and comfort as I picture my Almighty God gently cradling me against all evil and leading me safely through all situations. This is the ultimate Gift…and one we should not take lightly! So, share the Good News…shout to all who will listen that our God has come and stands ready to guide and guard us with power, protection, and promise! And nurture your relationship with Christ like the last roses of winter!  Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for January 4, 2023 – Be a good workman, glorify God – and always control your narrative.

2 Timothy 2:15
Work hard so God can say to you, “Well done.” Be a good workman, one who does not need to be ashamed when God examines your work. Know what his Word says and means.

I was watching an interview on ABC’s The View with actor Winston Duke, who plays the role of “M’Baku” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, “Black Panther” – and the sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The 36-year-old actor was asked about the tragic loss of fellow actor, Chadwick Boseman, who starred in the original “Black Panther” movie and subsequently died of colon cancer. Boseman kept his condition private – many did not realize he had cancer until after his passing. He continued working and making films, the last of which was released posthumously.

Duke was also asked about the death of his mother, just a couple of months ago. Duke noted that she fell ill suddenly and died six weeks later, just two weeks before the premiere of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The ladies of The View asked Duke how he carried on with his red-carpet appearance for the movie’s premiere and a press tour to promote the film. He explained that at first, he was not sure he had the emotional fortitude to do this. Then he heard his mother telling him, “Always control your narrative.”

Paul is telling us in this letter to Timothy to…“Always control your narrative.”  He is advising us to work diligently to ensure that we are attuned with God…that we know what He desires and what His word says for our missions and ministries. Then we are to do everything we can to speak, act, and live in a way that not only pleases God – but glorifies Him.

Aside from Jesus’ command to love one another, this might be one of the most instructive verses in scripture. “Work hard so God can say to you, ‘Well done.’” Speak and act in such a way that you have no reason to be ashamed when God examines your work – and owe no explanation to any man. Let your faithful obedience to God speak for itself. Allow Him to guide you and guard your every word and action. Always control your narrative, to the glory and pleasure of God Almighty! Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for July 26, 2021 – Be courageous…and always go where God sends you!

Acts 28:12-16
We put in at Syracuse for three days and then went up the coast to Rhegium. Two days later, with the wind out of the south, we sailed into the Bay of Naples. We found Christian friends there and stayed with them for a week.

And then we came to Rome. Friends in Rome heard we were on the way and came out to meet us. One group got as far as Appian Court; another group met us at Three Taverns—emotion-packed meetings, as you can well imagine. Paul, brimming over with praise, led us in prayers of thanksgiving. When we actually entered Rome, they let Paul live in his own private quarters with a soldier who had been assigned to guard him.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

No doubt, you have had experiences where you were nervous about what was going to happen. You may have been apprehensive about a visit to the doctor or dentist. You may have moved to a new church or community, and you dreaded first encounters with unfamiliar people. Or maybe you started a new job or school classes and didn’t know a soul. We are all faced with daunting situations in our lives. While the outcomes are sometimes frightening or uncomfortable…there are also times where we are pleasantly surprised.

Paul and his fellow ministers had no idea what awaited them as they traveled from city to city sharing the Good News of Jesus…but they were always concerned that there could be trouble – that their visits could be dangerous, or even painful or deadly! I am sure that they prayed fervently between cities and asked God to give them courage and the strength to handle whatever – and whoever – they encountered. Imagine their delight when friends greeted them and led the way into Rome. Everything was better than expected…there was even a private sleeping quarters for Paul, complete with a guard at the door!

I cannot promise you that God will always clear your path in every situation and give you friendly faces to greet you – or literally provide a guard at your door. I cannot promise that every time you stand up for what God has laid on your heart, and speak and act as He directs, everything will go smoothly and you will be warmly accepted by all you encounter. In fact, I can almost guarantee that this will not be the case at some point. But we must move forward courageously, just as Paul and his men did. We must trust that in the overall scheme of things, God will not fail us when we follow His commands.

Ask God to reveal His will to you…then act on it! Say and do the things that please God and represent the teachings of Jesus to others, even when this is unpopular. Be courageous as you face unknown situations, new opportunities, and situations you know are filled with trepidation. Feel the presence of God with you and trust His care and protection. And remember to thank Him for His perfect guidance and His love and care.
