Daily Devotional for February 28, 2023 – When we live, love and serve as Jesus commands, even the demons will dance to His tune!

Luke 10:21-22
At that same time, Jesus felt the joy that comes from the Holy Spirit, and he said:

My Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I am grateful that you hid all this from wise and educated people and showed it to ordinary people. Yes, Father, this is what pleased you.

My Father has given me everything, and he is the only one who knows the Son. The only one who really knows the Father is the Son. But the Son wants to tell others about the Father, so they can know him too.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

I had to go back and read the first verses of Luke 10, because we often need the “back story” to know what God is trying to tell us. In this case, Jesus has chosen some seventy-plus people to be His “agents” in the area of His ministry…preaching and discipling to those they encounter. Jesus gives them specific instructions…stay at one home – don’t flit from house to house…travel light…and if the people welcome them, stay and heal their sick and tell them that God’s Kingdom is coming. But if the villagers reject these representatives or treat them poorly, Jesus tells them to leave and “shake the dust from your feet” as they remind these citizens that God’s Kingdom is near.

I like how The Message explains this…it says that Jesus says to tell the “naysayers” that the only thing they got from them was dirt – and they are giving it back!  The seventy-plus men go out and return with great news that “even the demons danced to Your tune!” Now, we see that Jesus is filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit. He is also thrilled that God used “ordinary people” to share His message.

Too often, we think that we don’t have anything to offer as Christ’s disciple. We think we are not “spiritual” enough, or we don’t feel like we are someone that others will take a second look at and say, “I want what he/she has (with regard to Jesus).” I am not talking about becoming someone that others wish to emulate because of appearance, material wealth, popularity, or position. I am talking about plain, everyday people who live and love as Jesus commands…and exude His joy and peace. THESE are the kind of people Jesus “recruited,” and this is how He wants you and me to “disciple.”

Here’s what I hear when I read Luke 10. Jesus is calling on us to serve as His hands and feet to others. He has told us to be careful who we “hang” with – and not to flit from one group to another looking for acceptance or the best “fit.” Jesus is telling us to “bloom where we are planted,” and if we are not well-received, move somewhere else. In other words, how we serve Jesus doesn’t depend on popularity…and it is not our job to convince others to live and serve as we do. We are simply to present the teachings of Jesus in our daily words and actions – and let the Holy Spirit handle the rest.

Some of the finest followers of Jesus I’ve ever known didn’t have a wide circle of social contacts or a lot of money. But they had the joy and peace that comes from enjoying an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. This dictated everything else in their lives – and defined how others saw them…and this pleases Jesus. Choose this day Who you will serve…then go back and read Luke 10 for some great tips on how Christ’s followers should conduct themselves. Remember, when we get this right, “even the demons dance to His tune!” Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for February 27 – Finding God in everyday places – and shouting with everlasting joy at His glorious presence

Jude 1:24-25
And now—all glory to him who alone is God, who saves us through Jesus Christ our Lord; yes, splendor and majesty, all power and authority are his from the beginning; his they are and his they evermore shall be. And he is able to keep you from slipping and falling away, and to bring you, sinless and perfect, into his glorious presence with mighty shouts of everlasting joy. Amen.    ~Jude

Several years ago, Greg and his friend Rick started hiking in the Arkansas Ozarks. They came up with a “bucket list” of places they wanted to visit, and they have made a good stab at seeing quite a few of them. Greg would come home and say, “I wish you could have seen what I saw.” At the time, I didn’t think I could do that much walking/hiking. I had done a number on my knees in my 20s-30s with running several miles a day on hard surfaces, and sitting in the floor with kindergarten students! So I opted for exercising in the community pool, while my husband and his childhood friend hiked the forests of our state.

When COVID hit, the pool closed. After it reopened, I did not feel comfortable there, and in the meantime, I had started walking in our neighborhood…just up and down the street at first. But as time went by, I found I could walk farther – and faster. I took a few walks with Greg, and my knees were fine. And then we started taking hikes together. And I have gone on some incredible treks and seen amazing things in the mountains of this state we call home.

Let me tell you, there is nothing more “holy” in my mind than sitting by an aqua blue river or waterway and hearing the rush of water over a shoal. I have had literal “mountain-top experiences,” and times that were equally “spiritual” sitting on a gravel bar along the water’s edge. I see God’s hand and majesty in a fern growing out of a rock or tree…or an entire hillside covered in moss as we approach a waterfall. I am mesmerized by the intricacies of rocks!  And I am always reminded of God’s care for me. If God is so interested in the perpetuation of nature, He is surely watching over me. If God cared enough to send Jesus, He undoubtedly loves me more than I will ever comprehend.

Jude is reminding us to recognize God’s hand in our lives…and to live like we are grateful! I told a friend today that some of the places we have visited lately have been so glorious that if Heaven is half as great, I’m all in!  I give all glory to God that He will be there, too! I plan to keep hiking and soaking in all that God has created. But I also plan to keep a strong grip on His hand – and do all I can to honor all that He does in my life every single day. What God does for me, He wants to do for you – and everyone else. How strong is your grip on His love and grace? Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for February 26, 2023 – Who is truly your father? It’s time to let the Son set you free!

John  8:30-45
Then many of the Jewish leaders who heard him say these things began believing him to be the Messiah.

Jesus said to them, “You are truly my disciples if you live as I tell you to, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

“But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said, “and have never been slaves to any man on earth! What do you mean, ‘set free’?”

Jesus replied, “You are slaves of sin, every one of you. And slaves don’t have rights, but the Son has every right there is! So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free – (Yes, I realize that you are descendants of Abraham!) And yet some of you are trying to kill me because my message does not find a home within your hearts. I am telling you what I saw when I was with my Father. But you are following the advice of your father.”

“Our father is Abraham,” they declared.

“No!” Jesus replied, “for if he were, you would follow his good example. But instead you are trying to kill me—and all because I told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham wouldn’t do a thing like that! No, you are obeying your real father when you act that way.”

They replied, “We were not born out of wedlock—our true Father is God himself.”

Jesus told them, “If that were so, then you would love me, for I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me. Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It is because you are prevented from doing so! For you are the children of your father the devil and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning and a hater of truth—there is not an iota of truth in him. When he lies, it is perfectly normal; for he is the father of liars. And so when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe it!

A few days ago, I saw an “advertisement” for a church that noted with obvious pride that they were a “King James Bible” church. I have seen similar notices for churches who proudly proclaim that they only sing hymns from the “Heavenly Highways” hymnal or another songbook –  or they may announce that their worship is “contemporary” or “evangelical.” I know people who proudly declare that they are “Old Testament” or “New Testament” Christians. And when I read the words of Jesus in this passage from John 8, I heard Him say… “None of that matters if you don’t believe in Me and follow My commands!

If we don’t recognize that Jesus was sent by our true Father, God Almighty – and we don’t act on His commands – we are wasting our time and energy. We may even be doing harm in the process. When we speak and act in anything other than love and faithful obedience to Jesus, He is telling us here that our “father” is actually the devil – and we are following his commands, not God’s. How so? The devil wants us to focus on this translation of the Bible or that old law from Genesis or Leviticus. He wants us to live in fear, guilt, and shame – and to constantly feel like we have to at least figuratively sacrifice a pure calf or lamb on the altar for every transgression – for the rest of our lives. The devil wants us to live in a constant state of turmoil, judgment, and bondage to human lies, laws, and ideals.

Jesus clearly tells us that when we focus on Him and live as He has commanded and demonstrated, we will operate in His truths (and therefore, GOD’s truths) – and these truths will set us free. We will be released to live and love with peace, joy, and the satisfaction of knowing that we belong to God’s Kingdom forever and ever. We will have the luxury of concentrating on gathering as many believers to join us as possible…and the satisfaction of being able to assure them that what Christ has done for us, He will surely do for them.

We have a choice. We can be slaves to sin, human attitudes and opinions – and the will of the devil. Or we can surrender to Jesus and operate in His truths – confident that in doing so, we are loving and serving the One and only God. He sent Jesus…His truths are those of our Savior. Choose today who you will serve…and live in a way that everybody can tell! My prayer is that you choose to follow Jesus.  Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for February 25, 2023 – Getting out of Jesus’ way, so that others can drink His Living Water

John 4:21-26
Jesus replied, “The time is coming, ma’am, when we will no longer be concerned about whether to worship the Father here or in Jerusalem. For it’s not where we worship that counts, but how we worship—is our worship spiritual and real? Do we have the Holy Spirit’s help? For God is Spirit, and we must have his help to worship as we should. The Father wants this kind of worship from us. But you Samaritans know so little about him, worshiping blindly, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes to the world through the Jews.”

The woman said, “Well, at least I know that the Messiah will come—the one they call Christ—and when he does, he will explain everything to us.”

Then Jesus told her, “I am the Messiah!”

Go back and read the verses prior to what I have shared here, and you will remember this as the familiar story of “the woman at the well.” Jesus has just spoken with this woman and reminded her that she has five husbands – and she isn’t even married to the man with whom she presently lives. The very act of Jesus speaking to this woman – especially without others present – is considered despicable by most. Jesus not only speaks to her…He tells her about His “Living Water.” His “presentation” is so compelling that the woman asks, “Where can I get this for myself?” This is when Jesus tells her that He knows about her history with men. It seems to me that Jesus is not judging this woman – He is telling her that none of this matters to Him, because He loves her unconditionally.

Even so, the woman appears dubious. She tries to trick Jesus with questions about how Samaritans and Jews worship. She points out the differences in their ideas and opinions. This woman at the well is so many among us today…and rightly so! A lot of people are asking, “Why is your way better than mine?” They want to know why we claim to know, love, and serve Jesus Christ…but we have put limits or qualifications on everything from where and when we worship – to who can sit with us and/or participate in Bible teaching and lay leadership. People are asking why it matters how much money we make, what kind of car we drive, what we wear, and who we love.

The woman at the well is every person who cannot really see Jesus, because others speak and act in ways that mask His true identity and spirit. These people see rules, restrictions, biases, anger, hatred, and selfishness. They want to believe in Jesus. But when they look at those who claim to serve Him, it appears that the real Master has not yet arrived. Essentially, they echo the words of the woman at the well – “The Messiah will come, and when He does, He will explain everything to us.”

May I have your attention for a minute? The Messiah is HERE! He has come, and He has explained and demonstrated His teachings and commands! But many are simply not listening. They want a “Burger King” faith with Jesus, where they literally have things their way. They want Jesus to fit into the neat little box they have created for Him…and anyone else who wants to follow Him and share in discipleship and blessings must conform to their “criteria” and become like them. Hear me when I tell you, Jesus did not say, “Be like this guy or that one.” In John 10:27, Jesus says, “My sheep recognize my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

Choose today who you will truly follow and serve. Have you really tasted Living Water, and are you ready to worship Jesus as He commands? Are you in any way a stumbling block to someone who is looking for the true Messiah? This is the day for us to get things right…to start recognizing Jesus voice and serving only Him in all things. This is the day to start speaking and acting in a way that brings Christ Jesus glory and honor – and lets all know that He lived, died and rose for them just as much as anyone else – even the woman at the well. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for February 24, 2023 – One last request…growing in God’s truth and holiness with one heart and mind

John 17:9-21
“My plea is not for the world but for those you have given me because they belong to you. And all of them, since they are mine, belong to you; and you have given them back to me with everything else of yours, and so they are my glory! Now I am leaving the world, and leaving them behind, and coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your own care—all those you have given me—so that they will be united just as we are, with none missing. During my time here I have kept safe within your family all of these you gave me. I guarded them so that not one perished, except the son of hell, as the Scriptures foretold.”

“And now I am coming to you. I have told them many things while I was with them so that they would be filled with my joy. I have given them your commands. And the world hates them because they don’t fit in with it, just as I don’t. I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from Satan’s power. They are not part of this world any more than I am. Make them pure and holy through teaching them your words of truth. As you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world, and I consecrate myself to meet their need for growth in truth and holiness.”

“I am not praying for these alone but also for the future believers who will come to me because of the testimony of these. My prayer for all of them is that they will be of one heart and mind, just as you and I are, Father—that just as you are in me and I am in you, so they will be in us, and the world will believe you sent me.”

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

It seems there was a lot for me to unpack in these verses. These are the words of Jesus as He prepared to ascend into Heaven after the Resurrection. Jesus is acknowledging that God sent Him to earth to guide, guard and redeem all people. And now, He is asking God to continue to take care of them and protect them from the wiles of the devil.

Jesus is also asking God to equip us to be pure and holy as we follow His words of truth and share them with others. And finally, Jesus asks God to extend this love, grace, mercy and protection even to unborn generations. This is where you and I come into this picture. Jesus is asking God to equip us to remain of one heart and mind, committed to His word and will (which is truly God’s word and will). Jesus is asking God to continually remind us that He is within us…and to convict us of the responsibility that accompanies this knowledge.

Our commitment to Christ comes with an incredible challenge. Our “duty” as redeemed servants of the Most High God is to demonstrate and emulate His truths and teaching to each person we encounter. One of Jesus’ last acts was to ask God to ensure that we were kept safe from the devil…and that we continue the work of furthering His Kingdom for generations to come. Are you up to the task? Have you fully committed to doing this work every day in whatever manner Jesus directs? Are you fully “in” as a disciple of Christ Jesus – and ready to be of one heart and mind with all people as an example of your confidence in God’s truths?

Jesus loves us so much that even as He prepared to ascend to the Father, He was pleading for grace, mercy, and protection over each of us. How will we demonstrate our gratitude and allegiance? This seems like the perfect day to decide. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for February 23, 2023 – Seeing God when we look at Jesus…who do others see when they look at you?

February 23 ~ John 12:44-46
Jesus summed it all up when he cried out, “Whoever believes in me, believes not just in me but in the One who sent me. Whoever looks at me is looking, in fact, at the One who sent me. I am Light that has come into the world so that all who believe in me won’t have to stay any longer in the dark.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

Most people have friends and family members who “have their back.” If we had a need, these people would do their dead-level best to meet it. They would be there for us in a crisis. They would stand up for us if we were being challenged. They would pray with us and for us and do everything in their power to help us as necessary.

But these same friends and family members may not share our views about a myriad of situations and issues. They may disagree with us about everything from politics to scripture interpretation to which restaurant serves the best burger or steak! They do not represent us in all things. No one who looks at them gets a true picture of you or me. This simply is not possible. Each human being is a unique individual, and while we all share common traits and interests – and we may even share a love of Jesus – you cannot truly say, “I know this person because I know his brother/friend/spouse, and we agree about everything!”

Jesus is telling us that when we trust Him, we are trusting God. What Jesus commands and offers to us is directly an extension of God’s commands, love and care. We can take this to the bank! We can trust completely that when we listen to Jesus, we are hearing from God. We can be assured that His desires are God’s…that His promises are those of our Heavenly Father. If Jesus said or did it, so did God! And Jesus is inviting us to trust Him completely.

Humans are fickle…and none of us are perfect. But Jesus is 100% the “real deal.” You and I will never be Jesus…but He wants us to emulate Him to the best of our ability. Jesus wants us to trust His word and will…to believe His promises…and to live in such a way that others see even a glimmer of Him when they look at us. Our mission is two-fold. We are to trust Jesus and believe that when we follow Him, we are truly following God.

Additionally, we are to demonstrate His love and light to others with every word and action. We are to do our very best to represent our Savior in all things, and at all times. We won’t always get this right, but Jesus will bless and multiply our efforts. If even one person sees Jesus and our Heavenly Father through our discipleship, God will be glorified. Start today to renew your efforts to be Jesus to others…to follow His word and will and fully represent Him in all you say and do. Watch Him multiply your efforts and bring light into the darkness. Hallelujah, and Amen!

Daily Devotional for February 22, 2023 – Discerning the voice of Jesus…it’s time to be one of His sheep!

February 22 ~ John 10:25-30
Jesus answered:

I have told you, and you refused to believe me. The things I do by my Father’s authority show who I am. But since you are not my sheep, you don’t believe me. My sheep know my voice, and I know them. They follow me, and I give them eternal life, so that they will never be lost. No one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father gave them to me, and he is greater than all others. No one can snatch them from his hands, and I am one with the Father.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

If you felt sick, would you call your banker? If you needed your kitchen faucet repaired, would you hire an attorney to do the work? Just a few months ago, the governor of Florida was recruiting military veterans to teach in the public schools, regardless of their background or expertise. Would you trust such a teacher to adequately instruct your children?

We rely on our banker to manage our money properly, and our doctors and nurses to treat us when we are ill. We trust the plumber to fix our pipes…and the lawyers to handle our estate planning, wills, and other legal matters. We trust our military personnel to protect our nation – and our teachers to educate our students. And we trust Jesus because of His authority as the Son of God…His flesh incarnate…to be our Savior – and to guide and guard us physically, mentally and spiritually.

I will tell you that I have an “arsenal” of experts I trust to help me with a myriad of situations and issues. I also have people in my life whose voice I recognize instantly, and I immediately know that what they say to me can be trusted or believed. I am certain that God places these advisors in my path. There are also those whose voice I recognize…but their words are not believable to me. I am not one of their “sheep.” And I thank God for giving me the wisdom to discern this difference.

Throughout our lives, we must learn who to trust and believe. We must determine who we should follow – and who is trying to lead us down the wrong path. When we commit to the authority of Jesus and become one of His sheep, other decisions about who to trust will fall into place. We can measure them against the will of God and what we feel His Holy Spirit telling us. When we surrender to Jesus and become one of His sheep, we fully recognize His authority and authenticity.

I am so grateful for Jesus…and for the assurances that serving Him affords me. I know where I am headed, and Who is guiding and guarding my steps. I am assured that nothing can separate me from Him…ever! I am also grateful for the mortal guides and guards that Jesus provides to keep me headed in the right direction. As one of His sheep, I am humbly honored to serve as He commands – and to encourage others to follow Him as well.

My question to you is, “Who are you serving?” Are you one of Jesus’ sheep that hears His voice and obeys His commands? Do you have the assurance of Jesus’ continual protection and guidance – even into Eternal Life? Do you know those whose voices you recognize – and who they serve? I urge you to figure out the answers to all these questions – and to re-examine your relationship with Jesus. Make sure that you are truly one of His sheep…and listening to His voice above all others. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for February 21, 2023 – It’s time to acquaint others with Jesus…and help them share in His glory!

John 1:1-2, 14
Before anything else existed, there was Christ, with God. He has always been alive and is himself God.

And Christ became a human being and lived here on earth among us and was full of loving forgiveness and truth. And some of us have seen his glory—the glory of the only Son of the heavenly Father!

The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.

It has been almost 24 years since my dad left for heaven. My niece was nine when he died. Her children never knew their “Pap-pa” in person, of course, so we have tried to acquaint them with him through stories and photographs. As I have sorted through childhood photos of my dad, it has been striking to me how much our youngest nephew, Nathan, resembles him. While not all agree with me, a few have volunteered that Nathan looks a lot like my dad. I find this amazing…and it makes me happy to have this little reminder of how we are all connected.

You and I have never physically seen Jesus…and yet we know Him. We don’t have photographs, but we have plenty of written and oral “history” to acquaint us with Him. And a lot of us have seen the Glory of the Son of the heavenly Father in a myriad of ways…from miracles and wonders, to the “Still Small Voice” that accompanies us every day – and guides and guards our words and actions.

Now it is our turn to acquaint others with Jesus. We can do this through “oral history” of what He has done for us. We can also do this by obediently following Christ’s commands to love one another and treat others as we wish to be treated. Many have heard of Jesus – now they are looking for a word or demonstration from those who truly represent Him in present day. Are you one of them? You are supposed to be!

Let’s ask Jesus to show us how to do more to share His story with others. Let’s be the hands and feet of Jesus to all we encounter – and give them glimpses of His glory through our own words and actions. Let’s live in a way that others say with certainty that we resemble our Heavenly Father.  And let’s do our part to remind others that Jesus is alive and present – and readily available to all who call on His name. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for February 20, 2023 – How can mere mortals get right with God?

Job 9:1-10
Job continued by saying:

“So what’s new? I know all this.
The question is, ‘How can mere mortals get right with God?’
If we wanted to bring our case before him,
what chance would we have? Not one in a thousand!
God’s wisdom is so deep, God’s power so immense,
who could take him on and come out in one piece?
He moves mountains before they know what’s happened,
flips them on their heads on a whim.
He gives the earth a good shaking up,
rocks it down to its very foundations.
He tells the sun, ‘Don’t shine,’ and it doesn’t;
he pulls the blinds on the stars.
All by himself he stretches out the heavens
and strides on the waves of the sea.
He designed the Big Dipper and Orion,
    the Pleiades and Alpha Centauri.
We’ll never comprehend all the great things he does;
    his miracle-surprises can’t be counted.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

I couldn’t help but think of an old margarine commercial from the 1970s, where a woman dressed in a flowing white dress wearing a crown of flowers on her head declared, “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.” The premise was that the margarine tasted so much like real butter that even “Mother Nature” was fooled. Job is telling us that we are no match for God! We could never fool God…His power and supremacy are beyond anything we could ever achieve. I love the last sentence of this passage…“We’ll never comprehend all the great things he does; his miracle-surprises can’t be counted.”

This begs the question, “What are we doing?” Why are we trying to challenge or contradict God? When Jesus clearly has commanded us to “love one another,” why are we making exceptions? When Jesus ministered to the rich, poor, sick, well, beautiful and ugly, old and young alike, who are we to decide that this person or that group is unworthy of discipleship and care?  Where do we get off deciding what is worthy of our attention, mission, or ministry, when we are clearly being directed to serve otherwise? When was the last time you or I designed a constellation, shook the earth, or caused day to turn to night?

The lesson for me from these verses in Job is that we all need a huge dose of humility. We need to recognize that we are blessed and anointed only because of God’s grace and mercy…and His gift of Jesus. We are in no position to argue with God…or to try to remake His rules. We truly are unable to fathom all of God’s miracles, wonders, and surprises. They cannot be counted…and this is by Divine Design.

We need to take a long hard look at how we are serving and representing God. How are we responding to His commands…and where have we decided to take matters into our own hands and thrown the risk of peril and catastrophe to the winds? We need to correct course, to humbly say, “Lord…YOUR will, not mine will be done.” We need to demonstrate just how much we love and respect our Heavenly Father by following His word and will to the letter.

It may not be nice to try to fool “Mother Nature,” but there is no chance we can ever one-up God…and we shouldn’t even want to try. Decide today whether you will truly serve Him…and get busy showing this with every word and action. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for February 19, 2023 – Putting our faith into action – believing is just not enough!

James 2:19-20
Do I hear you professing to believe in the one and only God, but then observe you complacently sitting back as if you had done something wonderful? That’s just great. Demons do that, but what good does it do them? Use your heads! Do you suppose for a minute that you can cut faith and works in two and not end up with a corpse on your hands?

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

This morning, I watched a video that touted ways to treat arthritis. The “expert” noted that most people are seriously dehydrated, and we should all drink more water. I thought of Grandma E, who struggled with this. She believed in the value of hydration, but she did not like to drink water! Sadly, there are a lot of people in this same boat!

Almost to a person, we agree that cigarette smoking is terrible for our health and well-being on any number of levels. And yet, so many say between “drags” on a cigarette that…“I simply cannot quit,” and/or “I don’t want to stop!” I still remember my mother relating how my dad’s cardiologist closed Daddy’s medical file upon learning that he had never stopped smoking – even after quadruple heart bypass surgery. The doctor told my dad, “There is nothing else I can do for you.” Believing that cigarette smoking is bad for us doesn’t matter if we continue to smoke!

Like many, I have been told by medical professionals to cut back on saturated fats in my diet…to eliminate as much sugar as possible…and to exercise vigorously and routinely. I have done all these things – from time to time. But consistency is key…and I am a work in progress!  Several years ago, I broke my left ankle and tore most of the ligaments in my foot. The orthopedist told me firmly and with conviction, “Either you do these therapy exercises until you cry in pain, or you will lose your range of motion in this foot forever. You have about six weeks to accomplish this.” Thankfully, I was referred to a therapy center associated with a hospital in a nearby city, and the wonderful professionals there had me walking in just a few weeks. I am grateful that they helped me do the work to regain full range of motion in my foot…and I have absolutely no issues with my foot more than fifteen years later.

Now, James is telling us that believing in God is not enough…we must demonstrate our faith with our words and actions. Sadly, I am not sure he has made believers out of many of us! We have not sensed the urgency of the admonition from a stern orthopedist grumbling, “You have six weeks to get this done!” I am not sure we are really listening to Jesus as He tells us to “go, win, disciple, love, and serve” in His name and as He has demonstrated.

Yes, we want to believe. We want the promise of Jesus’ presence and protection in our daily living…and the guarantee of Eternal Life spent at His feet. But we aren’t always willing to do the work to further His Kingdom. We have a ton of excuses. We claim we are not “outgoing” people, or we insist we are not good at knowing what to say and do. Sometimes, we simply declare that “I don’t want to do this” as we succumb to laziness and apathy. Whatever the reason, the Kingdom of Heaven is not served when we fail to combine “faith with works,” and Jesus must surely shake His head in disappointment.

We can do better. I am sure of it! We can make this the day that we get out of our easy chairs, get up, and get going. We can prayerfully seek God’s direction for each day – and speak and act as He ordains and commands. We can put our faith into action – and on full display – as a demonstration to others of the power and presence of Jesus Christ. I’m not going to tell you that we only have six weeks to accomplish this, but I know that time is of the essence! So, let’s get busy! We have Kingdom work to do and no time to waste! Alleluia!
