Daily Devotional for April 30, 2018 – Step out of the darkness and into the LIGHT!

John 3:19-21
“This is the crisis we’re in: God-light streamed into the world, but men and women everywhere ran for the darkness. They went for the darkness because they were not really interested in pleasing God. Everyone who makes a practice of doing evil, addicted to denial and illusion, hates God-light and won’t come near it, fearing a painful exposure. But anyone working and living in truth and reality welcomes God-light so the work can be seen for the God-work it is.”

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

Last week, Greg put new bulbs in the fluorescent light fixtures in our laundry room.  It’s now one of my favorite places. I like to turn on the lights and soak in the brilliance!  I have to admit, I didn’t consider the room to be all that dark before…but the addition of new bulbs has made the room as bright as daylight!  I also noticed this winter and spring that long strings of dreary, dark, rainy days dampened my mood.  The minute the sun came out and brightened up the rooms of our house, I immediately felt more upbeat and hopeful.  Yes, I know there is a name for that syndrome…and I guess I have a full-blown case!

My point in sharing this is to say that a lot of us get comfortable – or at least complacent – with the “darkness”.  Even when the devil and his agents drag us down, cast a shadow over our mood, and fill us with a sense of dread or doom…we may still think all is well.  It’s like the person who says, “I had to get well to know how sick I was!”  We may not even realize “the crisis we’re in”.

Maybe you and I need a “light-bulb change” of sorts.  Perhaps it’s time we evaluate where we are – and the conditions in which we are functioning.  We need to ask ourselves some hard questions and take stock of our lives and how we are operating – and who influences us. Every effort must be made to work and live in truth and reality…and the light of Christ.

So throw open the curtains and blinds…change the light bulbs…step outside into the sunshine…and seek light in all things – especially the Light of Jesus Christ.  Make every necessary adjustment to ensure that you are seeking His voice above all others – and operating in His will for your life.

The late Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis (1856-1941) is credited with this quote:  “Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants, electric light the most efficient policeman.”  I would argue that SONlight is the BEST light of all…and the “illumination” we should be seeking in every area of our lives.

Aren’t you tired of running for the darkness?  Will this be the day that you come into Christ’s Light – and stay there?

Daily Devotional for April 29, 2018 – Making the right choice

John 3:16-18
God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them! No one who has faith in God’s Son will be condemned. But everyone who doesn’t have faith in him has already been condemned for not having faith in God’s only Son.

Today as I drove home from taking the children back to their parents, I passed a city policeman who was “running radar”. I was driving the speed limit, so I had nothing to worry about…but I instinctively felt my foot ease off the gas pedal. You and I both know that if we drive over a hill, and a policeman is waiting with his/her radar gun – and we are speeding – we are probably going to be issued a “ticket”.  We will likely have to pay a fine – and we may have to appear in court!  Our insurance rates might rise…and if we have made a habit of driving too fast, we could be sentenced to some “community service”.

All of this is easily avoidable.  Believe it or not, driving a car in this country is a privilege that comes with some obligations.  We must respect the law, obey the rules, and drive defensively, and we’ll have a fairly good chance of staying safe on the road – and avoiding those “tickets”!

This scripture passage reminds us how much God loves us. In the last verses, we are reminded that eternal life and salvation are as near as trusting in Jesus and inviting Him to be the LORD of our life.  We are also warned that if we ignore God…or turn our back on Jesus, we’ve pretty well written our voucher for the eternal damnation of Hell. It’s far worse than a speeding ticket…and there is no “community service” or other penance that we can do to change our final destination.

You and I can choose to abide by the laws of our community, state, and country… drive the prescribed speed limit…and save ourselves from the trouble and penalties of a traffic ticket.  We can also choose to give our heart to Jesus…to follow Him and trust that He will care for our every need – and then some – and live in the confidence and joy of knowing that our future is secure…here and for all Eternity.

To me, this is a “no-brainer”…and I have to say that it grieves my heart to think that anyone might choose to disavow God.  I know a few who make this claim, and just the thought of it makes me incredibly sad. I am certain that it breaks God’s heart, too. But this is their choice…and He will never force Himself on us.

My prayer today is that you will choose God. If you haven’t surrendered your heart to Jesus…please do so. Ask Him to give you salvation, freedom, and a literal “ticket to Heaven” for all eternity. Just like I cannot guarantee that driving defensively will ensure that you never have an accident…I can’t promise you a perfect life as Christ’s disciple.  But I know that whatever happens…Jesus will carry you through it. And nobody in the devil’s camp can even begin to make that kind of offer.

Give your heart to Jesus. Trust Him to meet your every need. Secure your place at God’s Heavenly table. This is the most important decision you will ever make…and there is no better time to do so than this day. Don’t waste another minute – let Jesus change your heart and release you from condemnation – once and for all.

Daily Devotional for April 28, 2018 – Have you moved into your “Forever Home”?

John 3:4-14
“Born again!” exclaimed Nicodemus. “What do you mean? How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

Jesus replied, “What I am telling you so earnestly is this: Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.  Men can only reproduce human life, but the Holy Spirit gives new life from heaven; so don’t be surprised at my statement that you must be born again! Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it will go next, so it is with the Spirit. We do not know on whom he will next bestow this life from heaven.”“What do you mean?” Nicodemus asked.

Jesus replied, “You, a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things? I am telling you what I know and have seen—and yet you won’t believe me. But if you don’t even believe me when I tell you about such things as these that happen here among men, how can you possibly believe if I tell you what is going on in heaven? For only I, the Messiah, have come to earth and will return to heaven again.

Suppose someone offered to give you a beautiful, spacious, well-constructed home in a desirable neighborhood.  I mean, this house had everything!  There was no “catch” – you just had to sign a paper saying that you accepted ownership and would live there forever, and the fully furnished home would belong to you.  But you were hesitant…you already had a nice home and were perfectly comfortable there.  Maybe you were a little cramped for space…and the roof leaked in a spot or two.  But in all, you were doing just fine in your present living quarters.

You knew others who had accepted a similar offer and were “living the high life” in their new homes.  There were occasional minor repairs to address…and cleaning, maintenance and upkeep still had to be done.  But for the most part, life had never been better since they signed the deed and made the move to this new “neighborhood”.  Still, you were hesitant to accept the same offer.

Money was not the issue. You could afford to buy the new house yourself and move right in.  But the owner would not “sell” his houses…he would only give them away to people who signed an agreement to maintain the house and live in it forever.  Each home was non-transferable for as long as the new “owners” were physically able to live there.

Would you do it?  Would you accept the offer and move? Do you see the correlation that I am trying to make?  Some of us are quite comfortable in our present situation.  We are “good people” who are kind to others and do a lot of nice things. We are moral, upstanding citizens…perfectly content with our present circumstances. Jesus is offering us an “upgrade”…a life with everything we currently have, plus His love and care, forgiveness of our sins, the continual presence of the Holy Spirit…AND the assurance of Eternal Life!  We just have to “sign the papers and make the move”.

Life will not be perfect in the “new neighborhood”. There will be “maintenance” issues, and an occasional “crack in the concrete”. But we will gain a constant companion to offer us His care and wisdom – and expert help with “repairs”.  We will be guaranteed a seat at His Heavenly table forever and ever. We will be released from the fear of hell and damnation and free to enjoy the abundance of life as an heir to the throne of the Most High God. And all we have to do is say “Yes” to His offer.

I hope you have taken this “deal”.  I pray that you have “signed the deed” and become “born of water and the Spirit”!  If you haven’t…this is the perfect moment to do so – and it couldn’t be simpler. Just say, “LORD, I need you to forgive me…to fill me with your Holy Spirit…and to give me new life in You!  I want to live with You forever and ever – and belong to Your Kingdom.”  If you genuinely pray this prayer, Jesus will handle everything else.  This will be the most significant “move” you ever make…and the most stress free.

What are you waiting for?  Have you been “born again”?  Isn’t it time you were?

Daily Devotional for April 27, 2018 – Conversations with our “Forever Friend”

John 14:25-27
“I’m telling you these things while I’m still living with you. The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you. I’m leaving you well and whole. That’s my parting gift to you. Peace. I don’t leave you the way you’re used to being left—feeling abandoned, bereft. So don’t be upset. Don’t be distraught.

Several years ago, I had a particularly trying afternoon with my Mam-ma Polly. The persons in charge of her case at DHS were dragging their feet about her application to move to an Assisted Living Facility. In Mam-ma’s frustration, she had lashed out at me – as if everything were my fault! I distinctly remember turning into a spot in the Walmart parking lot and feeling “abandoned and bereft”.  I honestly did not know what to do…so I sat in my car and prayed.

I distinctly heard God say, “If someone called you with this problem, what would you tell them?”  I thought about this and rationally laid out a “discussion” that would include suggestions, sympathy, and encouragement.  I went into the store with confidence that I had a “plan” – and that everything was going to be okay.

By the next Christmas, my grandmother had moved into the Assisted Living Facility.  My mother and her sister brought Mam-ma Polly to our house on Christmas Eve afternoon for our holiday meal and celebration…and she never made it into our house.  Mam-ma fell as she stepped from Mother’s car.  She hit her head on the concrete and lay in a stunned daze as blood poured down our driveway. Greg and I gave her “first aid” until an ambulance arrived, and then we went with her to the hospital Emergency Room.  It’s a long story, but the doctor on duty gave her something for pain that made her “woozy”…and then he began to write up discharge papers to send her back to her apartment.

We protested…he stood his ground.  He claimed there was no medical reason to keep her, despite the fact that she had been released from a hospital stay about 10 days earlier for something unrelated to the fall – and there was not an overnight nurse on duty at her facility. I was at my wits’ end, as this man stood his ground and flatly declared that my grandmother could not stay in the hospital.

I called my mother, and we discussed how helpless the situation seemed.  And then I went into the chapel…pleading my case to God and asking Him to show me what to do.  I think in those few minutes, that was one of most defenseless and defeated times of my life. I reminded God of this…and how much my grandmother was depending on me to keep her safe and well – and how in this instance, I felt I was failing her miserably.

I walked out of the chapel as my grandmother’s nurse approached to offer a suggestion that she felt might help. In what can only be explained as “Divine Intervention”, the hospitalist who had treated Mam-ma earlier in the month was on duty in the hospital…and he admitted her for observation.  She was subsequently diagnosed with a concussion and spent two days and nights there.

I share this to say that so often, we don’t recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit. We throw up our hands and declare that all is lost. We panic. We wallow in self-pity and seem to enjoy the “party” – at least a little. We allow the devil to fill our hearts and minds with fear, dread, hopelessness, and weakness. What we should do is sit quietly for a few minutes and talk to our “Forever Friend”.  We should call on the Holy Spirit to quiet us, calm us, and give us His peace and wisdom.  And we should trust that He is ready, willing and more than able to do this.

I will tell you that I am just as neglectful of this as anyone…and clearly, I should know better!  But God has reminded me even today as I write this that I do have His presence within me…that I am never alone…that there is no need to feel upset or be distraught.  I am well and whole, because that is Jesus’ gift to me. Nothing is too big for Him to handle!   I must never forget this…and neither should you!

Jesus has sent a “Friend” to abide with us every single minute of the day – in all situations and circumstances. He is waiting for us to turn to Him and say, “I need You!”  He will take it from there.  Are you ready to sit quietly, share your thoughts with the Holy Spirit…and give Him room to work?  Isn’t it time you were?

Daily Devotional for April 26, 2018 – Living in the whisper of God’s rule

Job 26:12-14
Listen! It’s God raising his voice!
By his power he stills sea storms,
by his wisdom he tames sea monsters.
With one breath he clears the sky,
with one finger he crushes the sea serpent.
And this is only the beginning,
a mere whisper of his rule.
Whatever would we do if he really raised his voice!”

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

Have you ever praised a child for doing something, and he/she said, “I wasn’t even trying!”?  Or perhaps you have realized that a child was making a half-hearted effort, and you said to him/her, “Imagine what you could do if you really applied yourself!”

For all of God’s power and the incredible things that He has, is, and will be doing…these have all been done with minimal effort…a whisper…one finger…a simple breath.  As the scripture suggests…imagine what might happen if God raised his voice or exerted brute force!

We don’t even begin to scratch the surface in our understanding of God.  We don’t fully realize how powerful He is…how much He cares…the depth and breadth of His love for each of us.  And Job questions whether we could handle this, were we fully aware.  In the Contemporary English Version (CEV)*, verse 14 says, “How little we would understand if this whisper ever turned into thunder!”

What I want you to take away from this scripture passage today is that nothing is impossible with God.  For all that we think we know about Him and how he operates…there is so much that we will never realize. God is bigger and more powerful than we could possibly dream…and that’s a good thing!

What are we to do with this information?  Let’s start by trusting God more. Let’s make a concerted effort to “let go”…to give God the credit He deserves…and give Him complete charge over our lives. Let’s operate fully in the knowledge that God is more than able to handle every single aspect of our lives perfectly…and He wants to do so.

It is likely that we could not handle the absolute magnitude of God’s power and glory – or His abundant love for each of us. But as His children, we must give Him our very best.  We must accept God’s gifts and live each day in His abundance – with full confidence that even His “whisper” is more than enough in every way imaginable.

Are you “applying yourself” as God’s precious child and trusting Him for everything in your life?  Isn’t it time you were?

Daily Devotional for April 25, 2018 – Who is your God?

Jeremiah 10:11-13
Say this to those who worship other gods: Your so-called gods, who have not made the heavens and earth, shall vanish from the earth. But our God formed the earth by his power and wisdom, and by his intelligence he hung the stars in space and stretched out the heavens. It is his voice that echoes in the thunder of the storm clouds. He causes mist to rise upon the earth; he sends the lightning and brings the rain, and from his treasuries he brings the wind.

For many years now, Greg and I have maintained that one of the advantages of living in a small town like ours is that there are not a lot of retail options.  Yes…we consider this an “advantage” in the context of “out of sight, out of mind.”  Mind you, Amazon has made it far too easy to get virtually anything one can imagine delivered to our doorstep – and usually in two days!  But when we moved “home” some 30+ years ago, we quickly realized that if the mall and larger grocery store chains like Kroger are not located right down the street, you learn to “make do” and focus on other things.  Shopping – at least in the physical sense – has almost totally lost its appeal for us.

Let’s be honest…a lot of us worship other gods.  Oh, I don’t mean we literally kneel before golden idols and sing praises or meditate.  But we have our “gods” all the same.  Some of us live for the weekend, when we can kick back, relax, have a drink or two and spend time on our favorite hobby – fishing, waterskiing, hiking, hunting, watching our favorite sports team, and more.  Some have made an idol of their kids’ sporting events. They live/eat/breathe for football/soccer/basketball/baseball and more.

Others are shopaholics, or they can’t let a day pass without playing video games or binge-watching some show on Netflix. A lot of folks seem to be almost obsessed with anything from housekeeping to eating out in search of “the perfect meal” to working on a beloved motor vehicle or artistic project.  Some have made lying around and doing nothing their form of “worship”.

My point is that a lot of us have found something to occupy our time, money, and attention besides God and His work.  We’ve found plenty of energy and enthusiasm for everything from shopping to attending ballgames to doing nothing. But we cannot muster up even a few seconds to spend with the One who hung the stars in space and stretched out the heavens.  When our favorite cable news pundit begins to speak…we’re all ears.  But when God’s voice echoes in the thunder and brings the wind, we have other things to do besides listen.

Our priorities are skewed, at best.  Instead of giving God “first dibs” on our time and energy, we’ve delegated Him to receive the dregs.  If we’re not absolutely exhausted when we plop into bed at night, we’ll whisper a perfunctory prayer as we drift off to sleep.  We might even thank Him for the day we experienced. But more likely, we’ll ask for a favor or a blessing, and that will be all of our “communication” that He gets.

But we can change this! We can awaken with a prayer of thanksgiving for another day of life.  Before we grab our phone or the TV remote, we can spend a few seconds – or even minutes – talking to the God of the universe and asking Him to help us set the tone for our day.  We can remember someone else who is in need of God’s love and care.  We can ask God to guide our thoughts, words and actions.  We can thank Him for never leaving us – even when we put Him on the shelf, so to speak, and walk away.

There is no power and wisdom in the “gods” that you and I tend to “worship”.  But we know the God who truly holds all of the stars in His hands.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of the activities that I have mentioned – in moderation, and in the right perspective.

When we prioritize – and put GOD first…everything else falls into place.  And we might just find out that we still have plenty of time for our own interests, as well!  If not, they will become like the shopping malls that we left behind in another town…you’ll discover that they were highly over-rated. But GOD is worth our time and attention.  Won’t you give Him yours?

Daily Devotional for April 22, 2018 – It’s time to “plant some flowers”!

Isaiah 61:1-3
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the suffering and afflicted. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted, to announce liberty to captives, and to open the eyes of the blind. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of God’s favor to them has come, and the day of his wrath to their enemies. To all who mourn in Israel he will give: beauty for ashes; joy instead of mourning; praise instead of heaviness. For God has planted them like strong and graceful oaks for his own glory.

On this week’s episode of CBS Sunday Morning, there was a segment* about old cemeteries where graves were originally created to hold planters for beautiful flower gardens. Over time, people neglected these graves – and weeds overcame the flowers.  But the executive director of a cemetery in West Philadelphia set out to change this.  She solicited the help of 25 gardeners to clean up the graves and plant new flowers.  Seventy-five people answered her call.

One “gardener” said that working in the soil and planting beautiful flowers atop a grave gave her the opportunity to confront some of her own thoughts and fears. She developed a new perspective on death – and life.  Many who come to the cemetery to work the soil spend hours researching Victorian plants to create an authentic garden…and their “work” offers them a chance to create “beauty for ashes”…a semblance of joy and praise for mourning and heaviness.  It’s as if God is showing the stewards of these memorial grounds that even in the “resting place” of the dead, “life” can abound.

God is speaking to each of us today. For some, He is saying, “All is not lost.”  I don’t know what weighs you down. I am not privy to your burdens or concerns, and I don’t need to be.  God knows them…and He is telling you to “plant flowers”.  Believe that He is with you – and in complete control.  Trust Him to bring beauty from the ashes and turn your heartaches and burdens into happiness and lightheartedness. Allow God to meet you right where you are…and fill you with hope and courage.

This morning, I passed out post-it notes to my 2nd and 3rd grade Sunday school students.  I told each child to make note of four things about God’s love and goodness that they wanted to remember this week.  As I handed the papers to one boy, I said, “I will help you with your answers.”  He replied, “You don’t have to.”  Gesturing to his open Bible, he added, “I already have them in here!”

This is the kind of faith and confidence that you and I need to cultivate. We need to recognize that God has given us everything we need…that His goodness exceeds what we could ever imagine…and His abundance far surpasses our ability to comprehend it.  God is waiting to comfort and strengthen us – and to undergird us in every situation.  Are we ready to “bloom where we are planted” and abide in His goodness?  Don’t you think we should be?

Daily Devotional for April 21, 2018 – “Good News!”

Isaiah 52:10
What a beautiful sight!
On the mountains a messenger
announces to Jerusalem,
“Good news! You’re saved.
There will be peace.
Your God is now King.”
Everyone on guard duty,
sing and celebrate!
Look! You can see the Lord
returning to Zion.
Jerusalem, rise from the ruins!
Join in the singing.
The Lord has given comfort
to his people;
he comes to your rescue.
The Lord has shown all nations
his mighty strength;
now everyone will see
the saving power of our God.

Late yesterday, my Facebook wall was flooded with pictures of happy 5-year-olds who attended “Kindergarten Roundup” in preparation for entering public school next fall…and students who were all dressed up with “spit and polish” for a middle school dance last night.  I have to tell you, it was a welcome reprieve from all of the “bad news” that floods our airwaves and “feeds” these days.

Accounts of these happy occasions and “rites of passage” give us hope for the future…a sense that life moves forward, and not everything is bleak and dreary.  In these verses from Isaiah 52, I feel like God is sending us a message…that there is still plenty of room for joy and confidence.  God seems to be saying, “Trust Me!  I’ve turned things around thousands of times…and I will do so again.”

In these verses, I clearly hear God telling me to stand up straight, hold up my head, and propel myself forward in His undeniably mighty strength and saving power.  If we don’t continue to operate with hope and faith that God will fix what we cannot…what does this say about our Christian faith and discipleship?

This doesn’t mean that we deny what is happening in our world…both our innermost circle and the planet in its entirety.  But we must always seek God.  We should always trust Him to handle all things. We have to share our joy and confidence in His strength and power with others – and offer them hope and courage as they trust Him, too. It may be a struggle sometimes. But when we think of how Jesus struggled and suffered to give us the privilege of living in God’s care and protection, it seems pretty ungrateful to throw up our hands and succumb to pity, fear and frustration.

Today, I am picturing the river valley behind my house as the sun rises over it on a perfect spring morning. I imagine a “messenger” who emerges from the first rays of light and announces, “Good news! You’re saved. There will be peace. Your God is now King. Everyone on guard duty, sing and celebrate!”  This is what I believe we must do…stand, sing, and celebrate!  Are you ready to join me?

Daily Devotional for April 20, 2018 – Don’t panic…God’s got you in His grip!

Isaiah 41:8-10
“But you, Israel, are my servant.
You’re Jacob, my first choice,
descendants of my good friend Abraham.
I pulled you in from all over the world,
called you in from every dark corner of the earth,
Telling you, ‘You’re my servant, serving on my side.
I’ve picked you. I haven’t dropped you.’
Don’t panic. I’m with you.
There’s no need to fear for I’m your God.
I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you.
I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.”

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

A friend of mine posted on Facebook that when he staggers to the coffeemaker each morning, he wonders – and dreads – what the news will bring as first he turns on the television.  He concluded that many of us are suffering from chronic anxiety.  I have to admit that most days, I “feel his pain”.

You and I are anxious about a lot of things…world events and the seemingly constant threat of a world war…whether our children will do well at tryouts and make the team – or if they will perform well as a team member…impending visits to a doctor and/or lab tests, x-rays, and more…the challenges of aging or family relationships…work…school – and finals…wedding plans – and funeral arrangements…and so much more. We can easily work ourselves into a tizzy – and stay in that state indefinitely!

When I read this translation of Isaiah 41:8-10, I was struck by the poignancy of two lines…”I’ve picked you.  I haven’t dropped you.  Don’t panic. I’m with you.”  I was reminded that there truly is no need to fear if I am sincere in my trust in God. He really does give me strength and hold me steady…and His grip on me is indeed firm.  I just have to remember this…and live in these truths and promises.

I’m a little ashamed that I have moments of doubt, fear and frustration…that for the briefest of times, I falter and give in to worry.  I know these are tools of the devil…that he is absolutely furious when I push out my hand and refuse to allow his demons of anxiety and negativity to control me.  And I take a lot of pleasure in knowing how much this angers him – and pleases God – when I get it right.  But I am human…and imperfect…so some days I worry – and dread starting my day.  Perhaps you do, also.

Let’s soak in the profound truth of this scripture passage.  Let’s embrace the fact that God picked us and will never drop us!  Let’s relish the power and strength of God’s amazing grip – and the promise that He will never let us go.  And let’s put one foot in front of the other and give the devil the boot as we keep moving forward in faith and hope.  God will help us – and keep us steady…and we will be just fine.  I’m in…are you?

Daily Devotional for April 19, 2018 – Prayers for a bluebird…trusting in God’s strength

Isaiah 26:4
Trust in the Lord God always, for in the Lord Jehovah is your everlasting strength.

Saturday, a bluebird flew into one of our picture windows and landed on the porch with a thud. Timmy and I watched him – stunned at first and struggling to breathe.  I told Timmy that given some time, perhaps the little bird would be okay. We waited and watched. On one of our trips to the window, we noticed that the bird was sitting upright…and later, he moved a few feet and got under a chair.

Timmy said, “I think his wing must be broken.”  I pointed to feathers stuck to our window and said, “I think he hit his head.  It may take him a while to get reoriented.  And he might die…but I will say a prayer and ask God to take care of him.” It took a long time, but somewhere around two hours later, we looked out- and the bird was gone.  Timmy announced, “Well, God answered your prayer!”  I can only assume that the bird got his bearings and was able to fly away…and perhaps God did breathe His strength into the little guy.

Today, I have been reflecting on several situations where prayers have been uttered – or are presently being lifted.  I’ve pondered God’s strength – and the countless times that He has carried me. There is no other explanation for how I managed – or how things worked out as they did.  And I know that God will do this again…countless times.

As I thought about the little bird (and I really did say a prayer for him) I realized that the God who cares enough to hear prayers for a bluebird – and send him on his way – cares even more about you and me. God has enough strength to go around…and He is ready to carry you and me through any and all situations and circumstances.  The question becomes…will we trust Him to do this?
