Daily Devotional for October 31, 2022 – It’s “the law”…or is it? Living in God’s grace with faith and love

Galatians 5:4-6
Christ is useless to you if you are counting on clearing your debt to God by keeping those laws; you are lost from God’s grace.

But we by the help of the Holy Spirit are counting on Christ’s death to clear away our sins and make us right with God. And we to whom Christ has given eternal life don’t need to worry about whether we have been circumcised or not, or whether we are obeying the Jewish ceremonies or not; for all we need is faith working through love.

My beloved Aunt Bessie was a devoted believer in Jesus – and quite the student of scripture. I remember hearing the account of her attendance at a Sunday school class one morning where a particular passage of scripture from the Old Testament was presented. I wish I knew the actual passage reference, but I know that Aunt Bessie spoke up and told her fellow attendees…“You do realize that these people were having a drunken party, don’t you?”  Either the other ladies had glossed over this point, or they just refused to acknowledge what they were reading. But on this Sunday morning in the 1960s, a group of Southern Baptist ladies were shocked and appalled to hear someone mention a “drunken party” in their Sunday school class! And yet…there it was, described in scripture for all to see!

I share this story to say that too many people pick and choose what to acknowledge in the Bible…or how they will interpret what they read. They make “laws” out of verses and passages that are not truly the commands of God…or they were meant for a specific people in a specific time. And over and again, people take phrases and passages out of context with the declaration that, “This is what it says in the Bible.” Some even go so far as to say, “MY Bible says XYZ,” as if they have some special edition with the real message from God!

Over the years, I’ve heard several people assert that they had to do something or attend an event just because the doors were open. Often, they would note…“The PASTOR said to come!” During the pandemic, I actually heard pastors and others claim that “church is the safest place to be,” as if somehow, God miraculously put physical barriers around church campuses and kept COVID from permeating them. In truth, there are many accounts of church bodies that were inundated with the virus…often with deadly consequences. After all, the first outbreak of COVID in my own county began in a church group, where many were hospitalized and at least one person died. And at least one other congregation was hit hard by the outbreak and lost members.

On a somewhat more subtle level, many have been led to believe certain things about their faith based on the word and “law” of other humans…leaders in the church, respected elders, or even dear friends who are steady in their convictions that “scripture tells us” certain things. They refuse to take a backward step to consider the context or a broader view of what has been written. We have got to be continually diligent in our study and interpretation of God’s word – and His will for our lives.

We cannot pick one or two verses and use them to justify our stance on a particular issue. As I consider the scripture passages from my outline for these devotionals, I generally expand the text to study verses before and after the passage in an effort to make sure that I am understanding fully what God intended me to share with you. Many times, what I thought was the main theme is something different as I consider the broader context and prayerfully ask God for guidance and discernment. And while God uses certain passages to direct us with regard to current events or situations, we must never twist His word to suit our own agenda.

Here’s my point…determine Whose “law” you are following. Are you claiming the word of God as your daily compass while failing to fully grasp the WORD of God for you in that moment? Are you so steeped in the “we’ve-always-done-it-this-way” or “that’s-what-I-have always-been-taught” mentality that you refuse to recognize what God is saying directly to you? I cannot tell you how many things God has shown me over the years that are vastly different than what I was taught. I do not blame those who lead and nurtured me. But I do thank God for speaking directly to me as I study His word – and showing me His truths.

We don’t have to stay mired in past ideas. We can change as God changes us. And we must! Seek God’s will and dare to boldly live in it. Trust Him to guide and guard you, even as others criticize or condemn you for your stances. If we focus on “laws” and miss God’s intention, we risk also missing His grace. Trust God. Listen for His voice – and follow His lead in all things. Truly, all we need is faith working through love. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for October 30, 2022 – Serving Christ according to His rules, not the world’s…it may be time to make some changes!

Galatians 2:19-21
What actually took place is this: I tried keeping rules and working my head off to please God, and it didn’t work. So I quit being a “law man” so that I could be God’s man. Christ’s life showed me how, and enabled me to do it. I identified myself completely with him. Indeed, I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not “mine,” but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I am not going to go back on that.

Is it not clear to you that to go back to that old rule-keeping, peer-pleasing religion would be an abandonment of everything personal and free in my relationship with God? I refuse to do that, to repudiate God’s grace. If a living relationship with God could come by rule-keeping, then Christ died unnecessarily.

Like many children, our niece and nephews do not like change. You should have seen and heard them last winter when they came to visit – and we had purchased new living room furniture. The oversized sectional that had been here all their lives was replaced by a compact loveseat and two recliners. Immediately, they declared, “We don’t like it!” Once they learned that the furniture was comfy – and the recliners were electric powered – they warmed up to the idea. Now, they appear to be completely on board with the changes.

The kids are also not keen on getting rid of any toys or clothes (even when they outgrow them). I will admit, I have talked of getting rid of some of the “baby toys” only to have a  child play with them like old friends – or brand-new toys! One day, ten-year-old Nathan informed me that… “You are not allowed to get rid of any toys until we are 20!” I guess we have a few years to go!

I get it…continuity is comforting. We gain a sense of safety and security from knowing that we’ve always done something in a certain way – and nothing is changing. Even good changes can sometimes be stressful and challenging. But as we all know, we don’t have to keep doing things the same way just because this is always how they have been done. And this goes for some of the “laws” we have learned in our relationship with God, as well.

This scripture passage is packed with important information. It is a great foundation for teaching us how to love and serve God. If we could all learn to embrace God’s gift of Jesus Christ – and salvation by His sacrifice – and seek His will and follow it, imagine how different the world could be. Consider what could happen if we stopped focusing on what others think, the “we’ve always done it this way” mentality and legalism purported by many followers, and blind acceptance of the “laws” that have governed many church bodies for centuries. If we simply focused on the Jesus’ commands to love God, love others, and treat all people as we wish to be treated, think of how readily the presence of Christ would be evidenced in our daily living.

There are a lot of people who fear change …especially in how they love and serve Jesus. They are afraid to look at scripture with fresh eyes and ask the hard question, “Is this really what God intended?” The shift in thinking and how we love and serve might not be as easy as adjusting to a new living room chair…or accepting that your favorite pajamas no longer fit and must be replaced by new ones. Hopefully, the results will be more profound and bring us into a deeper, more nurturing relationship with Jesus – for us and for those we love and serve in His name.

This is a good day to take inventory and see where we have settled into a rut of following others and doing what we believe will be most popular – and thereby most comfortable. It is time for us to seek God’s will over our own, and to make whatever changes are necessary to ensure that we are following Christ’s commands and honoring His incomparable, gracious gifts and abundance. We don’t have ten years to wait…we’ve got to do this now. Change is hard sometimes…but often so worth it. For many of us, this is one of those times. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for October 29, 2022 – Making the most of God’s grace…and seizing every opportunity to serve

Galatians 1:15-16
But even before I was born, God had chosen me by his gift of undeserved grace and had decided to show me his Son, so I would announce his message to the Gentiles. I didn’t talk this over with anyone.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

This morning, I watched a Facebook video post from Ophelia Nichols, known on social media as “Mama Tot.” Ophelia is the mother of Randon Lee, who was shot and killed in Mobile, Alabama, last July – the night before his 19th birthday. Ophelia shared a tearful story in this video about taking a trip to a local Dillard’s to look for shoes to wear to her son’s funeral. She wore a ball cap and mask, hoping to slip into the store, make her purchase, and slip back out relatively unnoticed. When the first salesclerk approached and asked if she could help, Nichols says words wouldn’t come, so she bowed her head and shook it to indicate she did not need help.

Soon, another clerk approached and offered help, and Ophelia said she “lost it.” The woman engulfed her in a big hug and said, “I know who you are, and I am so sorry.” Soon, the first clerk was there, too, and both ladies were engulfing “Mama Tot” in a huge hug. They helped her quickly find her shoes and make the purchase – and get on her way. Nichols said that today, she was finally able to hold it together to share this story, in hopes that these two ladies might see it. Apparently, she has not been able to identify them in person on subsequent trips to the store. But Ophelia Nichols wanted them to know that their demonstrations of quiet care and concern meant the world to her in that moment.

Even before these ladies were born, God knew that on this particular day, they would have an opportunity to provide comfort and consolation to Ophelia Nichols in one of her most difficult moments. Isn’t that amazing?  What is even more incredible is the consideration that God knows all the opportunities He will provide for you and me – and countless others – to minister to those in our midst. We don’t deserve this privilege, just as we don’t deserve to be redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Still, God has chosen us to share love, grace, mercy, kindness, compassion and more with those we encounter.

God has also chosen the people that He places in our path, knowing that He will equip us to minister to them wherever and however is necessary. Our job is to make good on this…to live up to God’s expectations and do what He has designed us to do! These missions may not always be fun. They may not involve people with whom we would normally interact. They require that we refrain from judgment or qualification and just do it!

Serving God and fulfilling His designs requires that we commit to His charge with no questions asked – and no reservations.  Paul mentions in this passage that he did not talk this over with anyone. He just did what God led him to do. You and I must be like Paul. When we demonstrate faith and confidence in God – and step up and out without question – we are fully operating in His grace and grand design. Figure out where God is sending you today. Whether He calls you to go above and beyond to serve a customer – or to sit quietly with a friend in need – or even a stranger, be ready to do whatever God sends you to do. Listen for His voice and gratefully, readily accept each assignment. Learn to trust God’s rhythms and resolutions…and bring glory and honor to Him with every opportunity. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for October 28, 2022 – It’s time to celebrate and cultivate God’s gifts and abilities – with love, grace and gratitude

Ephesians 4:7
However, Christ has given each of us special abilities—whatever he wants us to have out of his rich storehouse of gifts.

The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.

When I was a young girl, I thought I wanted to be a nurse. In fact, after an emotional church camp experience, I was quite sure that God was calling me to become a nurse on a foreign mission field! I remember my grandmother saying, “If you’re going to be a nurse, why not be a doctor instead? They make more money.” In truth, I grow faint if I see someone being stuck with a needle. A medical career was never “in the cards” for me! Even as a young teen, a college professor who visited our church for a workshop promised me a “full ride scholarship” to come to his school and study piano and voice. But after two weeks one summer as a pre-school assistant at Vacation Bible School, I knew that I wanted to study elementary education and teach young children.

In college, an English professor who had been a Hollywood screenwriter cultivated my love of writing and helped me hone my skills. Every step of the way, I see God’s hand in my life…I see how He gifted me for the prospects He would put before me…and I am grateful for the opportunities I have received. And I am not unique in this experience. I truly believe that God has a plan and design for each of us…complete with distinctive gifts and abilities.

I’ve been hearing and reading a lot lately about “trade schools” – alternatives to college that are tailored to the varied interests and abilities of students. It seems that many are beginning to recognize that a college degree does not make one “special” or superior in some manner. A local news station recently aired an interview with two college presidents in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. One of the leaders represented SEARK (Southeast Arkansas College), which offers degrees and certifications in many skilled “trades.” For instance, he noted that a student can take a 4-month course to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and go to work right away making as much as $50,000 a year or more.

I will be honest, when my light switch is acting up or I have a broken pipe, I don’t call someone with an MBA to fix it! But I surely want someone who knows what she/he is doing.  God has designed some of us to be plumbers, electricians, welders, mechanics, and nurses’ aides/medical technicians. He has designed others to be teachers, physicians, lawyers, administrators, and to work in other careers that require a college degree and more. God gave some the physical ability to be professional athletes, while He granted others the talent for entertaining us with their skills as actors and performers.

Imagine our world without store clerks. There are many in this world who need a good housekeeper, caregiver, or someone to care for their lawn and tend to home maintenance. We need carpenters, sanitation workers, and “road crews” just as much as we need firefighters, law enforcement officers and medical professionals. God has called some to be stay-at-home parents or childcare workers.  God even has a purpose and plan for retirees!

God has given some the gift of preaching. I believe He “calls” others to teach Sunday school classes, lead Bible study groups, work with youth groups, or even write books and devotionals! He also creates those with the gift of exhortation and/or empathy – the ability to encourage others and empathize with them in a hopeful manner. And some of these gifts may overlap. Again, when you and I have a specific need, we tend to seek the help of those we know have the skills and “gifts” to truly assist us.

I say all of this to remind you that wherever you are in your life journey, God has a plan for you. He is calling you to operate in the gifts and abilities He designed specifically for you. God is also calling on us to be gracious and loving toward others…to respect the path He created for each of them – and never to rank or judge one person’s gifts. It is time for us to recognize God’s divine and perfect plan – and to accept not only our part and position in this…but that of others, as well. Love one another and treat everyone as the precious child of God that He has designed them to be.  Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for October 27, 2022 – Acknowledging God’s love, grace and power…it’s time to let Him work!

Ephesians 3:20-21
I pray that Christ Jesus and the church will forever bring praise to God. His power at work in us can do far more than we dare ask or imagine. Amen.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

Friends have been posting for a few years now about a little boy named Gus. I don’t know this child – or his family – although there are family ties to my community and church. Gus was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2019, and he and his parents have spent the last 3 years traveling from one hospital after another in this country in search of treatments – and ultimately a cure. Now 5½ years old, little Gus is getting sicker by the minute. He is in pain as the tumors spread and grow, and his parents have acquired Hospice care for him. Collectively, all the hearts of those who have followed the story of “Augustus the Warrior” are broken. No one wants to think of losing a child. But no one wants to see a child suffer, either. And especially in recent days/weeks, little Gus has suffered.

But wait! These verses from Ephesians 3 say that God’s power at work can do far more than we dare ask or imagine. So can’t He miraculously heal this little boy and others like him? Believe me, many have asked God to do exactly this! In my own experiences, I have learned that God is indeed working…it just isn’t always as you and I think fitting or necessary.

Years ago, I asked my readers to join me in prayer for an 11-year-old boy named Job who endured a double lung transplant, after chemotherapy for leukemia decimated his own lungs. The doctors told Job’s mother more than once that she should sign the “Do Not Resuscitate” (DNR) papers and let this boy go to God. Job’s mother insisted that God did not confirm this. Today, Job is a young adult. He shares his story and the Good News of Jesus with everyone he can. Sometimes, God does answer “miraculously.”

Why does one boy get a “miracle” and the other doesn’t? I think the better question is, “What amazing things is God doing with little Gus that you and I cannot see?” I know how God has used this child already to bring people together in corporate prayer and hope. How God will continue to use this angel is beyond my comprehension. But I know that He will do this! No life story is wasted…no child is more precious than another. God loves all of us and has a perfect plan for each and every one of us.

In recent days and weeks, I’ve been reminded once again just how precious – and fleeting – life can be. We really must make the most of every minute and be busy sharing the grace, love, and power of God with others. We must ask Him to use us every day, according to His perfect plans, and to bless and multiply our efforts on His behalf. And we must do this for everyone…not just precious children or those who look, speak, think and act like us. The God who brought people from all walks of life – and from all around the world – together to pray for Gus and Job is more than able to do far more than we dare ask or imagine. Isn’t it time we believed Him – and show it?! Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for October 26, 2022 – Rooted in God’s love and grace…and paying it forward to others

Ephesians 3:14-19
When I think of the wisdom and scope of his plan, I fall down on my knees and pray to the Father of all the great family of God—some of them already in heaven and some down here on earth—that out of his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you the mighty inner strengthening of his Holy Spirit. And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts, living within you as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love; and may you be able to feel and understand, as all God’s children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high his love really is; and to experience this love for yourselves, though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully know or understand it. And so at last you will be filled up with God himself.

This morning, I saw a “Facebook memory” from ten years ago that showed our nephew, Timothy, roaring like a lion in his Halloween costume. I had found the “lion suit” at a local thrift store and added a mask fashioned from a paper plate and fabric scraps. In the photo, Timothy is not wearing the mask, and you can see his little scrunched up face as he gave us all his best “ROAR!” We took several photos that day, because we were celebrating the wedding of our niece and her husband, which took place on our back deck.

So much has happened since that day. We recently went out to dinner with our niece and her family to celebrate a decade of marriage.  As we looked at the photos from that day, we realized that only one other person who attended – our niece’s paternal grandmother – is still alive. When I read this passage from Ephesians this morning, I thought about what Paul was saying…how the Holy Spirit has given each of us mighty inner strengthening…how He has cultivated deep roots of love – for Him and for each other.

A lot can happen in ten years. A lot can happen in ten days! Just recently, a dear woman who belonged to my church visited mutual friends mid-week, attended church services on Sunday, and had a heart attack and died the following Tuesday. When we stop and look at all that has happened to us over the years…the only explanation I have for why we are still standing is God’s grace. And lest you think this was not extended to people like my friend who died, let me assure you that she would not return to this earth for anything we could offer her. Sometimes, God’s grace and love plays out in the calling Home of His children.

My point is this…I don’t have a logical, “human” explanation for how any of us have made it this far. And my human brain cannot grasp the vastness of God’s love and grace. But I fully accept everything He offers me. I am His…hook, line, and sinker! While I appreciate all that God grants me…I don’t spend a whole lot of time trying to understand or explain it! God’s love and grace are gifts…pure and simple. And I am so truly grateful. The more He fills me, the more I love Him and want to serve as a disciple of Christ Jesus. The more I grasp God’s intricate handiwork in my life and the lives of those around me, the more I want to tell everyone about this abundance and get in on the blessings for themselves.

The more I spend time with God and try to see His hand in every aspect of my life, the more amazed and humbled I am. I know I will never see the end of God’s love and grace – or fully understand it all. My prayer is that we will accept His gifts and determine every day to make the most of them by showing love and grace to others…all for His glory. Alleluia, and Amen!

Daily Devotional for October 25, 2022 – Lessons from the leaves and an eagle…it’s time to preach and write about things way over our heads!

Ephesians 3:7-12
This is my life work: helping people understand and respond to this Message. It came as a sheer gift to me, a real surprise, God handling all the details. When it came to presenting the Message to people who had no background in God’s way, I was the least qualified of any of the available Christians. God saw to it that I was equipped, but you can be sure that it had nothing to do with my natural abilities.

And so here I am, preaching and writing about things that are way over my head, the inexhaustible riches and generosity of Christ. My task is to bring out in the open and make plain what God, who created all this in the first place, has been doing in secret and behind the scenes all along. Through followers of Jesus like yourselves gathered in churches, this extraordinary plan of God is becoming known and talked about even among the angels!

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

Yesterday, I took a long walk in our neighborhood. It had been a few days since I had done a “workout walk,” so I turned on a podcast and headed down the street. Soon, I found myself stopping to snap photos of a handful of trees that actually have some fall color to them. I found myself noticing individual leaves that had fallen to the street. Some were quite colorful, while others had turned completely brown before falling. Others had a tinge of brown around the edges, as if they had been burned by the sun. But I found beauty in all of them, and I was struck by the thought that God knows each leaf. He designed their size, shape, and color. God knew before the leaf was formed whether it would shrivel and die from drought, or whether it would hang onto its branch until the last gasp of autumn gives way to winter. In the words of the Apostle Paul, these things are way over my head…inexhaustible riches and generosity of Christ. Call me a sentimentalist for getting so gushy about a few leaves in autumn…but I honestly believe God uses even these simple moments to get our attention and remind us of His love, grace, power, and care. And I count it a privilege to be able to write about these things.

As many mornings as we can, Greg and I enjoy coffee or juice on our back porch. Yesterday, I glanced up just in time to see a bald eagle soar past us and upriver. It seems that everywhere I turn, God is reminding me that He is still in control. Yes, I listened to upsetting news reports during the day and evening. I know that the world seems upside down in many regards…that hatred and divisiveness are rampant, that there is talk of three potentially deadly viruses (COVID, flu, and RSV) that are threatening many of us – especially children. I know that there is pain and heartache on every street, and life is not perfect for any of us.

Then an eagle soars in front of me, or squirrels scamper up and down an oak tree gathering acorns for winter. I step over a cluster of leaves on the street…some seemingly perfect, while others have wormholes, tatters, or are completely shriveled and dried. And I know that the God who cares so deeply about the intricacies of these plants and animals surely cares about you and me even more. He wants us to be well, happy, and whole. He wants us to share His Good News with others. None of us is qualified to “preach and teach.” Still, God calls on us to be the hands and feet of Jesus on this earth. And we have the perfect illustrations of how to do this in the words of scripture and the lessons that Jesus left us.

Spend some time with God today. Look around at the time and attention He has given to even the leaves, twigs, rocks, and wildlife in our midst. Understand that God is so much bigger than we can comprehend – and He loves each of us more than we will ever be able to understand. I don’t know about you, but this makes me want to do better…to live with more intention and hope…to hold my head up and say, “I am a child of the Most High God! I matter to Him…and so do you!” This is what God has called us to…a life of affirmation and acceptance of His love for all creatures…and a dispensation of this message to everyone we encounter. So let’s get busy! Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for October 24, 2022 – It’s time to ‘be like Paul” and welcome others into Christ’s Kingdom – all of them!

Ephesians 3:1-6
This is why I, Paul, am in jail for Christ, having taken up the cause of you outsiders, so-called. I take it that you’re familiar with the part I was given in God’s plan for including everybody. I got the inside story on this from God himself, as I just wrote you in brief.

As you read over what I have written to you, you’ll be able to see for yourselves into the mystery of Christ. None of our ancestors understood this. Only in our time has it been made clear by God’s Spirit through his holy apostles and prophets of this new order. The mystery is that people who have never heard of God and those who have heard of him all their lives (what I’ve been calling outsiders and insiders) stand on the same ground before God. They get the same offer, same help, same promises in Christ Jesus. The Message is accessible and welcoming to everyone, across the board.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

A dear friend of mine tells me he is not a fan of Christ’s apostle, Paul. He finds Paul to be arrogant – even a bit phony. My friend is highly intelligent, and he has not come to this decision lightly. He has studied Paul’s letters…and this was his conclusion. Since I have also studied the life of Paul – and his letters – we’ve had some interesting discussions about this. My take is that Paul is the perfect example of redemption and how Jesus can use anyone.

As a human being – and a sinner – Paul gives me hope. He speaks from a place of great transformation. Paul was a murderer, a liar, a tyrant, a bigot, and generally a truly bad guy. And Jesus radically and completely transformed him. Paul’s message then became… 1) I was wrong; 2) Jesus saved me; 3) He can save you from anything; and 4) Jesus’ love, grace, mercy, forgiveness and salvation is available to everyone.  In short, Paul says, “If Jesus did this for me, He can – and will – do it for anyone.” After his transformation and redemption, Paul made it his mission to minister to others and encourage them in their faith. He readily admits that Jesus did not make it easy for him to do this. Often, he was imprisoned in unimaginable filth and abusive settings. And Paul used this to demonstrate how even in the worst circumstances, there is room and reason to praise Jesus and serve Him.

I like how Paul doesn’t make excuses…and He doesn’t accept them from us, either. Were we to meet in person, I don’t think Paul would sit still for even a minute if we tried to argue against inclusion and grace toward all people. If you or I opened our mouth to give him a “But…,” I truly believe Paul would shush us with a wave of his finger and the admonition that Christ’s love is offered to everyone across the board…and with Him, all things are possible. He would follow with the directive that “this is what you are to do, as well.”

So let’s get busy! Let’s thank Jesus every day that he has not imprisoned us in a cell that is literally filled with human waste. Let’s thank Him that whatever circumstance in which we find ourselves, He is with us. Let’s thank Jesus that in Paul’s letters, we find instruction and encouragement for missions and ministries that further His Kingdom. Let’s ask Jesus to show us how to model Paul’s example of serving wherever we are – to all we encounter. Let’s truly make it our aim to love one another as Christ loves us…every person, every day. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for October 23, 2022 – Insiders and outsiders…bricks and rubble…where do you fit in with Christ Jesus?

Ephesians 2:16-22
Christ brought us together through his death on the cross. The Cross got us to embrace, and that was the end of the hostility. Christ came and preached peace to you outsiders and peace to us insiders. He treated us as equals, and so made us equals. Through him we both share the same Spirit and have equal access to the Father.

That’s plain enough, isn’t it? You’re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You’re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone. God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day—a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home.

Yesterday, I looked through my Facebook feed and considered the wide range of situations and emotions depicted there…weddings, funerals, a family “guys camping trip,” precious children who are battling cancer – and at least one of them appears to be out of medical options, ultrasounds of not-yet born babies, “Senior Nights,” and college competitions, to name a few. As varied as the focus was in each of these posts, there was a common thread…all of the people represented are precious to Jesus. Each one has as much right to be redeemed by the blood of Christ as the next. Each “story” fits in with the others in some way…brick by brick, stone by stone…as we see the hand of Jesus Christ in every life.

You and I are part of a much grander plan. Jesus came and preached love, peace and acceptance. He then demonstrated this by accepting a torturous death on the cross to cover the sins of each and every person who would humbly bow before Him and ask forgiveness. Jesus had every reason not to include us…and yet, each of us can receive His love, grace, mercy, forgiveness and redemption. Every person is offered the same opportunity to submit to Christ and be guaranteed a seat at His Heavenly table for all Eternity.

You and I have gotten quite good at deciding who gets to be in our “circle” – or even our “feed” on social media. For every person we include, there are dozens we decide are not worth our time and attention in some manner. Aren’t you glad that Jesus does not discriminate as we do? Aren’t you grateful for His inclusiveness…His offering of salvation to each and every one of us…and His invitation to dwell with Him for all eternity?

If we have truly accepted the generous offerings of Jesus Christ, we must extend this same grace, mercy, forgiveness, love, and inclusion to others in our daily living. I’m not saying we have to add every person we encounter to our social media feed and become fast “friends” with them. But we do have to understand that Jesus values every human being just as He considers you and I to be  His treasure. If we are part of Christ’s body, we must love and accept all others just as He does.

My question for us to consider today is this…”Just how committed are we to Christ Jesus?”  How willing are we to include all others in order that we might belong? This is the perfect day to consider these questions and figure out where we fit into Christ’s Kingdom. Are we living, loving, and serving as a sturdy brick in what He is building? Or are we like loose rubble that clutters the edges of the foundation? Make this the day that you decide Who and how you will serve and “belong.” Alleluia, and Amen!

Daily Devotional for October 22, 2022 – It’s time to forego the selfies and focus on the love and grace of Jesus!

Ephesians 2:1-6
It wasn’t so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin. You let the world, which doesn’t know the first thing about living, tell you how to live. You filled your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then exhaled disobedience. We all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat. It’s a wonder God didn’t lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on his own, with no help from us! Then he picked us up and set us down in highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah.

This morning, I saw a post from a friend who lives in another state. She attended her son’s “senior night”, where the parents of seniors were recognized on the football field at some point during the game. Her son is a member of the band. Someone took pictures for my friend, and in one of them, her ex-husband is turned around in the line of parents, taking a selfie. In another, he is standing so close to the man next to him (and away from my friend) that someone remarked that he looked like he was all but wearing the other man’s clothes!

I wouldn’t normally throw someone under the bus like this, but my friend did post these photos via social media for the world to see. All I could think was that this night was supposed to be about the kids…seniors performing their last halftime show of their high school career. And this dad was doing what he felt like doing, when he felt like doing it…and making the whole event about himself. As Paul says, we all have “been there, done that” – and clearly, some of us are still there!

It is amazing to me that (thankfully) God has not done what Paul suggested…lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. We cannot read or watch a news report without learning about yet another antic by someone who thinks they are above the law or superior to others in some way. We are bombarded with untruths and selfish, hateful notions that pollute our lungs with unbelief and cause us to exhale disobedience. And the scariest part of all is that many of the main offenders stand up, thump their chests, and claim to be serving Jesus Christ as they perpetuate these lies and divisiveness.

Others claim to love and serve Jesus while making every situation and circumstance about themselves.  Too many of us are busy proverbially “taking a selfie on the football field at our child’s senior night.”  Clearly, we still don’t have this right. Even though Paul wrote these letters hundreds of years ago, we are still behaving badly, and many of us remain mired in that old stagnant life of sin.

But we don’t have to stay there. We can make this the moment that we truly “put away the phone” and start to focus on Jesus Christ. We can spend time in prayer, study, and fellowship with grace-filled, humble believers – and we can seek God’s truths and operate in them in our own lives. We can serve Jesus Christ with gratitude and honor – and demonstrate His love and grace to others with every word and action.

People are watching. They see when we behave honorably – and when we act like fools.  Make this the day that you truly come alive in Jesus Christ and serve Him with integrity and grace. Alleluia!
