Daily Devotional for December 20, 2023 – Follow the Light…God sent His Only Son – for ALL of us!

John 3:16-21
God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them! No one who has faith in God’s Son will be condemned. But everyone who doesn’t have faith in him has already been condemned for not having faith in God’s only Son.

The light has come into the world, and people who do evil things are judged guilty because they love the dark more than the light. People who do evil hate the light and won’t come to the light, because it clearly shows what they have done. But everyone who lives by the truth will come to the light, because they want others to know that God is really the one doing what they do.

A few days ago, I saw a news report about two women in south Florida who have been on a “porch pirating” spree. They appear to be a mother-daughter team, driving a stolen U-Haul van. Police were asking for help from the public in apprehending them. The crazy thing was that there are “Ring” camera videos of these two women going from house to house in a neighborhood, grabbing packages and toting them back to the van, then driving to the next home to do the same. At one point, they got to a house with some rather big boxes – including one that was clearly marked as a washing machine. Believe it or not, the women debated whether they could haul this monstrosity to the van – and at the last minute, they decided to skip this porch!

Clearly, these were not the “brightest bulbs.” Their faces are all over the Internet now – and were shared on national television last week. They will be caught! I was truly amazed at their brazen theft in broad daylight, given modern-day technology on virtually every porch. If you didn’t know before, hear me now…People.Are.Literally.Watching!

When it comes to our spiritual lives, people are watching, too. You may think you are getting away with something, but the bottom line is that people see and hear you. This is why I believe the adage that “When you show me and tell me who you are, I believe you the first time.” When you speak ill of or condemn people of color, immigrants, those of another sexual orientation, the poor and needy, or anyone who is somehow “different,” I hear what you are truly telling me! More importantly, GOD knows!

Read these verses in John 3 again. God sent His only Son – not just for straight, white Americans of a certain socio-economic and educational level. God sent Jesus for ALL PEOPLE!  ANYONE who chooses to surrender their sins to Jesus and live and serve as He commands and directs is guaranteed the privilege of Eternal Life. Those who follow Jesus faithfully are rightful heirs of His Kingdom – and granted full grace, mercy, forgiveness, and inclusion in His Eternal plans. This passage is clear that this great Gift is not extended to those who choose to remain in the darkness. But nowhere does scripture specify that certain people and groups are exempt because of some human-assigned status or label.

I have every reason to believe that by now, the women in Florida have been apprehended. Hopefully their porch pirating days are over and all of the items have been returned to their rightful owners. My prayer for you this Christmas is that you are fully operating in the love and Light of Jesus Christ…God’s great Gift to all of us…that you are truly saved and safe in His promise of Eternal Life…and that you are busy showing others the teachings of Jesus with every word and action. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for December 19, 2023 – Walking in the Light of God through Jesus Christ…and 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 what we claim

1 John 4:3-7
We saw it, we heard it, and now we’re telling you so you can experience it along with us, this experience of communion with the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. Our motive for writing is simply this: We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy!

This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there’s not a trace of darkness in him.

If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we’re obviously lying through our teeth—we’re not living what we claim. But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God’s Son, purges all our sin.

Last night, Greg and I took Nathan with us to a high school basketball game. Afterward, we drove through my childhood neighborhood and looked at fantastic light displays in a couple of yards adjacent to my childhood home. Nathan was enthralled…and indeed, the displays were over the top and quite magical. I am pretty sure both yards featured Nativity sets, but I know that one had an almost life-sized presentation. Nathan said, “Those look like real people!”

Being the engineer and creator that he is, Nathan also speculated on the time, details – and even the motor power necessary to propel a sleigh and reindeer into the air and rotate them, as well as the inner workings of other mechanical display pieces. (I was just imagining the electric bill!)  I could see Nathan’s “wheels” turning as he envisioned how the homeowner made all this happen. When I read today’s verses, I thought of God and His power as our Creator…and how He is the Light of our world in every way that matters. The intricate details of His “displays” are astounding – and yet, many of us never give them a single thought.

Don’t take God’s Light for granted. More importantly, don’t stumble around in the dark. Truly invest in sharing a life with God through Jesus Christ. Talk the talk…but also walk the walk – and live what you claim. Too many are not only hurting the witness of Jesus Christ by their darkness…they are also missing out on the pure joy that comes from fully trusting and serving Him over their own selfish desires and attitudes.

When I think of God’s Light in my own life, I like to envision the light displays in my childhood neighbors’ yards – times a bazillion! I hope and pray that my “display” has meaning for others and brings glory to God. I pray that those I encounter are enthralled with God’s love, light, and power for themselves – and filled with awe and wonder at how God does what He does! My prayer is that more people would start to truly live what they claim. Others will notice, and God’s glory and Light will be multiplied. And this, my friend, is our true purpose – this Christmas season and always!  Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for December 5, 2018 – Serving Jesus by serving others – are you a “point of light”?

Philippians 2:1-4
If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care— then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.

“I have spoken of a Thousand Points of Light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good. We will work hand in hand, encouraging, sometimes leading, sometimes being led, rewarding. We will work on this in the White House, in the Cabinet agencies. I will go to the people and the programs that are the brighter points of light, and I’ll ask every member of my government to become involved. The old ideas are new again because they’re not old, they are timeless: duty, sacrifice, commitment, and a patriotism that finds its expression in taking part and pitching in.” – President George H.W. Bush – Inaugural Address, 1989

Like many Americans, I have been glued to my television set watching the coverage of the funeral for former President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush. I will be honest…when President Bush was in office, I was not a fan. But he seemed to always conduct himself with civility and decorum…and in the years since he presided over our country, I have come to appreciate his dedication to public service – and to people around the world – even more.

I’ve watched dignitaries – ardent foes, many of them – greet each other with a smile, a handshake, and seemliness befitting the occasion. For just a morning, at least, our nation has come together to mourn the passing of a former leader…and many of us are participating in a “Philippians 2:1-4 moment”. The mood is somber, respectful, quiet and reverent…and it feels good, if that makes any sense.

Soon enough, we will return to back-biting, mean-spirited talk and actions, and general ugliness. Some will go back to pushing for a front-row seat and “sweet-talking” their way to the top. They will make everything about them and try to get ahead at all costs. Lending a hand to others will be replaced with an attitude of “What’s in it for me?”

Don’t let this describe you. Keep the spirit of these humble moments going.  As this passage says, “If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ…agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends.”  Do this for Jesus, because He does it for each of us, day in and out. Do this because He has called you to do it. Do this because His Spirit within you is greater than the worldly forces and evils that surround you.

President George H.W. Bush talked about the “thousand points of light” that would come from all corners of the country to make the world a better place. We belong to Jesus Christ, who is the Light of the World. Are you “shining” for Him today…and every day?  Don’t you think you should be?
