Daily Devotional for January 28, 2023 – “Talk to me, LORD!” Put God to the test and see for yourself how His mercies shower down on all who trust Him!

Psalm 34:7-8
For the Angel of the Lord guards and rescues all who reverence him.

Oh, put God to the test and see how kind he is! See for yourself the way his mercies shower down on all who trust in him.

This morning, the Arkansas United Methodist Conference welcomed a new Bishop, Laura Merrill at an installation service held in Little Rock, Arkansas. In her remarks to those in attendance and watching online, Bishop Merrill began by saying, “Sometimes we wonder…do you ever wonder when things might calm down?! Maybe we don’t let ourselves wonder that anymore. There aren’t any words anymore, really, for the swirling, the disorienting times that we’re living through. We’ve even worn out the word ‘unprecedented. [We] can’t even use it anymore! So, I’m not going to try to describe what it’s been like for me to become a Bishop in January 2023, at this time in the life of our church and the nation. I don’t really have words for that. I do, however, have a lot of other words.”

Bishop Merrill went on to talk about gratitude and love…how God blesses and cares for us. She noted, “It is a joy and a privilege to know ourselves as named and claimed by God of Love, and that knowing is where our unity lives. It’s not in being the same – it’s in having the same Source of Life.”

Here’s where the “test” that the psalmist mentioned comes into play. We are called to look at the pain, suffering, dissension, and violence that takes our breath – and turn to Jesus for solutions. He will always supply us perfectly with what we need. Bishop Merrill also noted that the body of Christ is the “Living Word” – and we are called to be part of this body and help bring Christ’s love and healing to the world. She told those listening that…”Our words of gentleness count, our spirit of humility count, our risks that we take for the sake of love and justice count.”  She added that God can use us to shift the balance…whether for one person or for many.

Yesterday, as I walked, I knew that the videos were soon to be released showing the brutal beating of Tyre Nichols by five Memphis policemen. All accounts were that these images were highly disturbing – and these reports were accurate. As I have said in this space many times, the news is so horrible and dark most days that it is almost unbearable to listen to or read the reports. So as I started down the street, earbuds in, I said, “Talk to me, LORD.”

Almost instantly, the songs that played had messages of “God is with you. You can do this!” and “Don’t give up!” The more I walked, the lighter my steps became. Here’s the crazy thing…this morning, I tried to find titles of some of these songs on my playlist to share with you, and it is as if they have disappeared. Perhaps I am just not recognizing them…or maybe God sent an angel to tune my playlist to exactly the songs I needed in that moment! He could do that, you know! Regardless of how it happened…I know that God’s angels attended to me.

You and I are tested every day in some way – from illness and injury to relationship issues, to discrimination, challenges at work, bills to pay, the rigors of aging, and the constant barrage of news about shootings, hateful rhetoric, and war – and so much more. Through all of this and more, God is with us. Jesus stands in the gap, His hands outstretched, and says, “Grab on! Trust Me! I came that you might have abundant life, and the Father will see to this.”

As the installation service concluded this morning with Holy Communion, the organist played, “It Is Well With My Soul.” And the congregation began to sing along spontaneously. It was as if God’s angels were wafting through the congregation and spurring them to demonstrate their trust and gratitude. God will show up and show out in ways we cannot imagine when we trust Him and offer our gratitude. He might even shuffle your playlist. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for December 22, 2022 – For God so loved the world….

John 3:16
For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son so that anyone who believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

It is no secret how much we love our children…all of them. I cannot even think about something happening to one of them. When one of them is sick or sad, I feel it in my heart and “bones.” When they celebrate a victory or receive an award or accolade, I am their biggest cheerleader. Greg is always thinking about the kids and finding things he thinks they might like – or wondering aloud if I think they would enjoy this outing or that event. When the children sleep over, we get up to check on them at night and do all we can to ensure that everything is just right for their visit. Even the nieces and nephews who are now grown with families of their own are still very dear to us and always have a special place in our hearts.

There is absolutely no way I could ever bring myself to even think about the possibility of sacrificing one of our children for the betterment of mankind. I cannot even “go there.” I can’t begin to consider letting one of them suffer so that countless others could live and be forgiven and blessed. Even to think that one of my children might have to do without something so that I could afford to bless another child in his/her place is hard for me. But physical, human sacrifice? Absolutely not!

Therefore, I cannot fathom how God did what He did. When I sit quietly and ponder the entire design…Christ born as a poor baby in a cattle stall, the “human” son of a carpenter Who would cultivate a ministry and then suffer inexplicably at only 33 (the age my niece will be on her next birthday) – and be brutally crucified, I am overwhelmed with awe and disbelief. I am also filled with incredible humility and gratitude.

Hear me on this…I know that I am incredibly blessed. I have a safe, warm home, a husband who loves me more than I can fathom, a family I adore, and more than plenty of all I want and need. But my greatest blessing is the love of God in His gift of Jesus. I sometimes say that I cannot fully comprehend how much – and how well – Greg loves me. But this is exponentially true when it comes to the love of Jesus. I will NEVER fully understand this level of love and sacrifice. And yet, God offers this love freely and abundantly to any who will believe in Jesus and call on Him to redeem them. For God so loved the world…Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for December 7, 2022 – Jesus came to us at the right time – when we were utterly helpless. How are we treating His gift?

Romans 5:6-10
When we were utterly helpless, with no way of escape, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners who had no use for him. Even if we were good, we really wouldn’t expect anyone to die for us, though, of course, that might be barely possible. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since by his blood he did all this for us as sinners, how much more will he do for us now that he has declared us not guilty? Now he will save us from all of God’s wrath to come. And since, when we were his enemies, we were brought back to God by the death of his Son, what blessings he must have for us now that we are his friends and he is living within us!

A few days ago, I saw two separate video clips of parents rescuing their children from a rabid animal. In California, a coyote appeared out of nowhere and attacked a man’s 2-year-old toddler on their driveway. He rushed to her and bravely kicked the animal away. In another state, a mother heard her daughter screaming on their porch and discovered that a rabid raccoon had attacked the child’s leg. She pried the animal away from her daughter and held it by the scruff of the neck while calling to her other children to hurry inside. Then she hurled the sick animal into the yard.

All four people involved in these incidents must now take the rabies shots – a series of some 40 injections into the stomach – to ensure they are not infected. The parents were exposed when they cleaned the wounds of their children. These videos caused me to wonder what I would do in such a situation. I am pretty sure I would react as they did…putting my own life in jeopardy to protect – even save – my children. And I bet you would do the same. Likewise, there probably hasn’t been any among us who hasn’t wished we could take our child’s sickness, pain, heartache, or frustration if it would make things better for them.

So we understand God’s love for us as our Heavenly Father. But at the same time, what He ultimately did for us…what Jesus did for us…is hard to fathom. How far WOULD you go – especially if it would save sinful, evil, unworthy people? Would you be willing to be nailed to a cross for people who you knew would promise to love and serve you, then take you for granted, treat you disrespectfully, and expect you to continue to pour out love and blessings on them regardless of how they behaved? Would you be willing to suffer, bleed and die for others to offer them the opportunity to be redeemed, forgiven and gifted Eternal Life?

I get that we are human…so even considering such a sacrifice is a stretch for you and me. But Jesus came to us as a human – and He made this commitment for each and every one of us. Jesus knew that some would continue to live as they pleased…and that others would outright reject Him. But He did this anyhow. Why in the world would we not want to serve – and emulate – Him?  How can anyone hear of the love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, compassion, and unconditional redemption that Jesus died to give each of us – and not want in on this? Just as importantly, how can we live in a way that demonstrates anything but the utmost gratitude and respect for our Savior?

Truly, I cannot wrap my brain around how much God loves me. I will never understand why Jesus did what He did for me…or the fact that He loves me so much that He wants me to spend Eternity at His feet – and feast at His table. Like the parents who wrestled their children from a rabid animal, Jesus bled for me. And I am honored and blessed to serve Him in return – not because He requires this, but because I can’t imagine doing otherwise. What about you?

Daily Devotional for November 16, 2022 – For God so loved the world…appreciating His love and sacrifice – and living with gratitude

John 3:16-17
“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again.”

Last night we attended the Fall 2022 Showcase 8th Grade Theater performance of “Thirty-three Little Pigs.” Our nephew, Timothy, portrayed several roles alongside his fellow classmates. While Timothy has been in plays since he was in third grade, this was the stage debut for many students, and they did an awesome job.

The audience was comprised of proud parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and friends. I sat next to Timothy’s dad, who I think had maybe come straight from work for the 6:00 p.m. performance. Our niece’s family has been dealing with the flu since Halloween, and the children’s dad is working extra-long hours at work right now. So he was visibly exhausted – but he was there! I know he couldn’t wait to get home, eat dinner, and get some sleep. But like a good father, he made the effort to be present for his children.

Let’s be honest…you and I often attend things when we would rather stay home. We make sacrifices and do things because we love those involved. Sometimes, we can be fairly generous and selfless. Sometimes! But I have to question whether we could ever make the sacrifice that God made – even if we knew that this would save the world at large. I don’t think I could. In fact, I cannot even fathom it! I am hurt and upset if our kids even get a scratch! When anyone in my family is sick, I have “sympathy pains” for them! To think of saying, “Okay…take this person or that one if it will save the world” is beyond my comprehension. To allow someone I know and love to suffer – even for the greater good of others – is just not something I can begin to understand.

This is why I am so grateful for God’s love and care. Without God’s love and sacrifice, there would be no salvation for you and me. There would be no promise – much less a guarantee – of Eternal Life in His presence. We would not have the Holy Spirit to walk with us and guard and guide our steps. We would not enjoy the comfort and peace of knowing that there is always Someone to whom we can talk with – about anything and everything. Without God’s sacrifice of Jesus Christ, I am not sure how I would get through a lot of days on this earth – and I bet you are right there with me!

If no parents or other loved ones showed up for an 8th grade play, the show would go on, as the adage goes. But if God had not given us Jesus, where would we be? As much as I cannot fathom what God did for us by giving us His Only Son, I can’t imagine life without Jesus even more. For God so loved the world…and how thankful I am for His sacrifice!  Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for October 23, 2022 – Insiders and outsiders…bricks and rubble…where do you fit in with Christ Jesus?

Ephesians 2:16-22
Christ brought us together through his death on the cross. The Cross got us to embrace, and that was the end of the hostility. Christ came and preached peace to you outsiders and peace to us insiders. He treated us as equals, and so made us equals. Through him we both share the same Spirit and have equal access to the Father.

That’s plain enough, isn’t it? You’re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You’re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone. God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day—a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

Yesterday, I looked through my Facebook feed and considered the wide range of situations and emotions depicted there…weddings, funerals, a family “guys camping trip,” precious children who are battling cancer – and at least one of them appears to be out of medical options, ultrasounds of not-yet born babies, “Senior Nights,” and college competitions, to name a few. As varied as the focus was in each of these posts, there was a common thread…all of the people represented are precious to Jesus. Each one has as much right to be redeemed by the blood of Christ as the next. Each “story” fits in with the others in some way…brick by brick, stone by stone…as we see the hand of Jesus Christ in every life.

You and I are part of a much grander plan. Jesus came and preached love, peace and acceptance. He then demonstrated this by accepting a torturous death on the cross to cover the sins of each and every person who would humbly bow before Him and ask forgiveness. Jesus had every reason not to include us…and yet, each of us can receive His love, grace, mercy, forgiveness and redemption. Every person is offered the same opportunity to submit to Christ and be guaranteed a seat at His Heavenly table for all Eternity.

You and I have gotten quite good at deciding who gets to be in our “circle” – or even our “feed” on social media. For every person we include, there are dozens we decide are not worth our time and attention in some manner. Aren’t you glad that Jesus does not discriminate as we do? Aren’t you grateful for His inclusiveness…His offering of salvation to each and every one of us…and His invitation to dwell with Him for all eternity?

If we have truly accepted the generous offerings of Jesus Christ, we must extend this same grace, mercy, forgiveness, love, and inclusion to others in our daily living. I’m not saying we have to add every person we encounter to our social media feed and become fast “friends” with them. But we do have to understand that Jesus values every human being just as He considers you and I to be  His treasure. If we are part of Christ’s body, we must love and accept all others just as He does.

My question for us to consider today is this…”Just how committed are we to Christ Jesus?”  How willing are we to include all others in order that we might belong? This is the perfect day to consider these questions and figure out where we fit into Christ’s Kingdom. Are we living, loving, and serving as a sturdy brick in what He is building? Or are we like loose rubble that clutters the edges of the foundation? Make this the day that you decide Who and how you will serve and “belong.” Alleluia, and Amen!

Daily Devotional for October 20, 2022 – God thought of everything…it’s time to live with grace and gratitude

Ephesians 1:7-10
Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, his blood poured out on the altar of the Cross, we’re a free people—free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And not just barely free, either. Abundantly free! He thought of everything, provided for everything we could possibly need, letting us in on the plans he took such delight in making. He set it all out before us in Christ, a long-range plan in which everything would be brought together and summed up in him, everything in deepest heaven, everything on planet earth.

It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

Hopefully, at least once in your life, you have experienced an event where someone thought of everything. Maybe a person or group rallied to celebrate your birthday, or you went on vacation to a resort where all the details were attended to impeccably. Greg and I recently attended his class reunion, and the organizing committee had gone to great lengths to make sure that every event was planned to the last element Everything from dinner napkins to t-shirts and ball caps had been emblazoned with a logo featuring school colors and signifying the event. The hostess had even painted paw prints (our school mascot is the panther) on her deck and walkways!

Why do people go to such great lengths? Generally, this is done to make the experience as enjoyable and memorable as possible. As Paul tells us in this scripture passage, God has planned and orchestrated every detail of our lives with the aim of preparing us for Heaven. He sent Jesus to die for our sins so that not a single person has to be excluded from a seat at His table in Paradise for all eternity. Most of us are aware of God’s generosity and grace. But I am not sure we acknowledge it like we should – at least consistently. I am not sure we demonstrate sufficient gratitude in our daily words and actions.

Stop and think about God’s abundance today. Consider as best you can how God has attended to every single detail of your life – even before you were born. It is impossible for us to fully grasp the magnitude of God’s love and grace. But we must make an effort to recognize Him and live in a way that demonstrates gratitude, honor, and respect. God truly has “thought of everything”…and He wants all of us to enjoy every single gift and blessing. There is plenty of room at His Heavenly table for everyone, and I hope to see you there someday.

Meanwhile, let’s do our dead-level best to live with grace and gratitude…to honor and glorify God’s unbelievable and completely undeserved gift of salvation by the blood of Jesus Christ. Let’s focus on the details as we love others and serve as Christ’s disciples in the time we are given on this earth. Now is the time to show the world Who we are living for – and to let them know that they can receive His abundance as well. Alleluia, and Amen!

Daily Devotional for September 21, 2022 – No more dents, dings and scratches…it’s time to show our gratitude to Jesus by loving one another!

1 Peter 1:18-25
Your life is a journey you must travel with a deep consciousness of God. It cost God plenty to get you out of that dead-end, empty-headed life you grew up in. He paid with Christ’s sacred blood, you know. He died like an unblemished, sacrificial lamb. And this was no afterthought. Even though it has only lately—at the end of the ages—become public knowledge, God always knew he was going to do this for you. It’s because of this sacrificed Messiah, whom God then raised from the dead and glorified, that you trust God, that you know you have a future in God.

Now that you’ve cleaned up your lives by following the truth, love one another as if your lives depended on it. Your new life is not like your old life. Your old birth came from mortal sperm; your new birth comes from God’s living Word. Just think: a life conceived by God himself! That’s why the prophet said,

The old life is a grass life,
    its beauty as short-lived as wildflowers;
Grass dries up, flowers wilt,
God’s Word goes on and on forever.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

Last winter, I got a new vehicle. There was really nothing wrong with my “old” ride. In ten years of ownership, we had put somewhere around 50,000 miles on that SUV. But Greg wanted me to have a new vehicle with all the latest safety features, including a back-up camera. We had not purchased a brand-new car in decades, so we spent weeks and months reviewing all the options and selecting just “the one.” I nicknamed her “Pearl.” She is a beautiful white frost color. The children call her “The Spaceship” because of the high-tech dashboard and all the features, lights, and ports for charging their devices.

We had not owned Pearl very long when I lifted the back hatch one evening. I thought I closed it again when I had finished whatever I was doing. But as I lowered the garage door, I heard this horrible noise. Whether I had not given the hatch time to close – or it did not activate, and I didn’t realize it – the garage door had caught on the hatch and was pulling it downward…until it stuck. I rushed to raise the garage door and relieve the pressure on the hatch – and survey the damage. I was incredibly upset, but thankfully, it’s not terrible…a scratch many would never notice. But I know it’s there. My first “ding” to my new car. Let me tell you, I am ultra careful now about that hatch and the garage doors!

The hatch still works just fine, and the car drives like a dream. As I said, unless you know the scratch is there, most will never notice it. But we worked long and hard to buy this vehicle, and it pained me greatly to think I had created this unnecessary blemish. Now I know this is a stretch, but when I read these words in 1 Peter today reminding me of the sacrifices God made by sending Jesus to die for my sins, I thought of the countless sins we commit against Him. Some of them seem like “scratches and dings”…and others are more extensive and require some serious mechanical or “body work.” But ALL of them were of our own doing…and thereby unnecessary and unworthy of our faith and commitment to Jesus.

As I noted, I am now far more conscious of the new vehicle and my surroundings. The scratch serves as a reminder to be more aware and careful with Pearl in the future. We cannot change our past, but Jesus has paid the price for our sins…scratches, dings, and more. Now we must show Him our gratitude and devotion by following His commands and doing what pleases Him and brings glory to God. This means we must “love one another as if our lives depended on it.” Notice Peter didn’t say love those who look, think, speak, and act like you. He reminded us to “love one another.” That means everyone. I know…it’s hard to love some people. But that is the point. If we really, truly want to show Jesus how much we love Him – and how grateful we are for His sacrifices – we will carefully and thoughtfully do what He asks…without exception.

I have made my peace with the scratch on my new vehicle. I have also made peace with my past sins – and accepted Christ’s forgiveness and redemption. Now I must make every effort to never say or do anything again that would add another blemish or dishonor His great sacrifice on my behalf. My prayer is that you will make this your intention as well. Life is short, and there is much work to be done. This is the day that the LORD has made. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for April 23, 2022 – Stop asking “When, LORD?” It’s time to travel with a deep consciousness of God!

Greg and I got a “save the date” card in the mail today announcing the wedding date of a young man we have known since he was in pre-K. The card said, “You can stop asking when we’re going to get married!” We knew that Austin and his high-school sweetheart, Ashley, were engaged. And we vaguely knew they were planning a fall wedding. Now we know the exact date, and eventually, I’m sure we will know the precise time and location. I also know from social media posts that a lot of work and planning has been taking place in the background for a long time now – and soon, everything will come together for the Big Day and a beautiful celebration of these two and their commitment to each other.

Stop and think about this…God has been planning your life for a long, long time! Not only that, God has known every single detail of our lives all along…the good, bad and ugly. I have to tell you – I’m astounded that God had even the slightest desire to rescue me – or any of us. On our best day, we fall short of His glory and the sacrifices that Jesus made for us in countless ways – from random unkind thoughts to sinful words and actions. Still, God planned for us…He sent Jesus to live and die for us…and He is still preparing a future for us! All of this humbles me and makes me want to do better…to try harder…to truly “travel with a deep consciousness of God” in my minute-to-minute living.

We will never earn God’s favor. We will never be “good enough” to deserve Jesus Christ and all that He sacrificed for us. There is not one of us who will ever truly merit the glories of Heaven. And yet, all of this is ours for the taking. Isn’t that reason enough to do all we can to serve God every single day? Isn’t this enough motivation to honor Jesus’ command to “Love on another”?  I don’t know about you, but when I talk with God – now, and most assuredly when I meet Him in Heaven – I want to be able to say, “Lord, I did my best. I tried my hardest. I hope I brought you glory and honor most of the time.”

I truly cannot fathom all the behind-the-scenes planning and care that God offers on my behalf. But I know that He continually works to give me exactly what He designs and desires for my life. It is up to me to accept these gifts – and do all I can to show my appreciation for them. I know Who holds my future, and I know that God’s plans for me are perfect. I can stop asking, “When, Lord?” and rest in the assurance that He is working everything out for my good – and His glory. And you can do this, as well. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for January 13, 2022 – God does the giving and the saving…it’s time to serve Him with faith and gratitude!

Ephesians 2:8-10
Because of his kindness, you have been saved through trusting Christ. And even trusting is not of yourselves; it too is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good we have done, so none of us can take any credit for it. It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others.

Several weeks ago, I referenced If God is Love, Don’t be a Jerk, by John Pavlovitz. I am still muddling through this book…and honestly, I am not sure how I feel about all that he proposes. But there are some valid points, and one pertains to the author’s early church experiences, which mirror my own quite closely.

Pavlovitz notes that his early faith was based on fear. He was afraid not to trust God…not to believe in Him or serve and obey Him…because of the retribution of hell. I have said more than once that I grew up picturing God like a lion tamer…holding a chair in one hand and a whip in the other…ready to “tame” me into submission at every turn. I am truly astounded at the number of times in my life I have thought, “I am surely going to hell for this.”

Pavlovitz loses me when he suggests that there is no hell…that a loving God would never send any of His creatures to such a horrific place. But where I do find His message compelling is in the way he looks at his faith and relationship with God. Here, he parallels the message of Paul to the Ephesians…there is nothing you or I have done – or can do – to “earn” the favor of God. We cannot earn Salvation through Jesus Christ with good deeds, big donations, or fancy declarations. Trust in Jesus is not something we can manufacture. A real, right and true relationship with Jesus Christ is based on His grace, mercy and forgiveness, God’s love for us – and our acceptance of this gift.

The result should be our innate desire to trust and serve God…not because of fear that we will be punished or damned to hell. We should not trust and serve Jesus because we feel we will earn “credit” – or because we believe our Salvation is dependent on “good works.” I can tell you firsthand that the more we love, trust and serve Christ Jesus out of a deep and abiding love and gratitude, the greater our abundance and blessings will be.

Moreover, when challenges come to us – and they will come – we are in a far better position to manage them with God’s help because we have internalized this trust, acceptance, and an abiding appreciation for His love and care. Because I feel no “obligation” to trust and serve Jesus, I do so more freely and with greater exuberance. Because I had nothing to do with the “saving” or His blessings, they mean more to me – I am more eager to do whatever I can to show God just how much I honor this gift.

Spend some time in quiet contemplation today and think about all that God has designed for you. Consider how you have reacted and responded to Jesus…how you have internalized His gift of Salvation…and where you may be trying to earn something that was given freely. Thank God for His abundance, strength, power and plans…and make a concerted effort to trust and serve Him out of deep and abiding love and gratitude – not guilt or fear. Jesus died that we might live. Stop trying to earn His favor – and get busy serving because of it! Hallelujah!

Daily Devotional for October 26, 2020 – Take a walk – and reconnect with God!

Revelation 1:4-6
From: John

To: The seven churches in Turkey.

Dear Friends:

May you have grace and peace from God who is, and was, and is to come; and from the sevenfold Spirit before his throne; and from Jesus Christ who faithfully reveals all truth to us. He was the first to rise from death, to die no more. He is far greater than any king in all the earth. All praise to him who always loves us and who set us free from our sins by pouring out his lifeblood for us. He has gathered us into his Kingdom and made us priests of God his Father. Give to him everlasting glory! He rules forever! Amen!

Recently, Greg and I saw a news report that suggested that we take “slow walks” where we walk with intention and really look at what is around us. These are designed to help us “center” and de-stress – and to reconnect with our surroundings and recognize the beauty and intricacy that is right in front of us, but often overlooked. Yesterday afternoon, I set out to walk in our neighborhood – and around our yard. I took my camera and photographed the colorful leaves, a few wildflowers – and even some rogue honeysuckle blooms on a vine that climbs a shepherd’s hook in our back yard. The temperature was a crisp 52 degrees with a light “spit” of rainy mist…and God’s artistry and handiwork was in abundance.

I thought about a walk I took in March 2020, shortly after we were “shut down” for two weeks in an effort to curtail the spread of COVID-19. The leaves that are now every color of the rainbow were just beginning to bud. I don’t recall seeing any flowers then, but the late-winter foliage had a beauty all its own. I marveled at the intricacy of God’s plans for trees and plants – and how we can see His love and care for the smallest details, even in a pandemic.

Seven months later, I am still awed by God. I am still amazed by Jesus and all that He did for us – and how He loves us even now. No matter what season we are in – or what “season” we are in – Jesus is still with us. He is still all-powerful and all-loving. If you doubt this even for a second, take a walk in your yard or neighborhood and really look at what is in front of you. God is with us…He is working in our lives – and in our world. Let us take time each and every day to give Him glory and praise, and to humbly submit to His will. “He has gathered us into his Kingdom”…Hallelujah and Amen!
