Daily Devotional for November 23, 2023 – Give thanks, love one another, stay on track and steady in God…lessons for this Thanksgiving Day

Philippians 4:1; 4-5
My dear, dear friends! I love you so much. I do want the very best for you. You make me feel such joy, fill me with such pride. Don’t waver. Stay on track, steady in God.

Celebrate God all day, every day. I mean, revel in him! Make it as clear as you can to all you meet that you’re on their side, working with them and not against them. Help them see that the Master is about to arrive. He could show up any minute!

It is late in the afternoon as I write this message, and I have just now looked at social media for the first time today. I was busy this morning baking a turkey breast and getting things ready for lunch with Greg and his brother and sister-in-law, who drove up from Little Rock to spend Thanksgiving Day with us. We talked about the years when our gatherings were much larger – and all the fun we had and being together and playing games and “cards” (Hearts!).

When I finally looked at Facebook, my “memory” was a picture taken 12 years ago at my grandmother Polly’s Assisted Living Facility. My sister and I were enjoying  a “Thanksgiving dinner” with Mam-ma Polly. I shared the photo and said I was sure that my sister and grandmother had cornbread dressing and a good hot roll today for their Thanksgiving Dinner in Heaven.

Thanksgiving Day – and all holidays – look so different these days than even 10 years ago. Our immediate family has dwindled and scattered to the point that “family gatherings” are almost a thing of the past. Yet we are no less grateful, and our love for each other is still strong. We’ve gotten creative, and we find new and different ways to celebrate and share our love for each other. Yesterday, Greg and I took the children to “Urban Air” (an indoor amusement park in a nearby city) for a day of fun. Our “Thanksgiving Meal” shared together was burgers and fries at McDonald’s…and we savored each bite and a great, lively conversation.

The words of Paul to the Philippians are profound and important- and I echo them today. I love each of you with the love of Christ…and I love my family and friends dearly. Truly, I want the best for each one. My prayer is that of Paul…that we would all celebrate God every day. He is so good to us – far above and beyond what we could imagine or deserve – and worthy of our praise every day of the year, not just on this one!

I don’t know what Thanksgiving Day looks like for you, but wherever you are and however you are celebrating, put God at the forefront. Truly make this day – and every day – a time to reflect on His goodness and put it into practice as you interact with others. Follow the commands we have been given…love one another…and work together to further God’s Kingdom. Someday, we will all have the opportunity to sit at God’s Heavenly table and have cornbread dressing, a good hot roll, and whatever else our heart (and stomach) desires – even a burger and fries! Be ready for the Master’s return…and make sure you serve every day with words and actions that reflect your steadfast obedience and faithfulness. Happy Thanksgiving Day! Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for May 15, 2021 – God created everything. I’ve got questions…He’s got answers!

Ecclesiastes 11:5
No one can explain how a baby breathes before it is born. So how can anyone explain what God does? After all, he created everything.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

Two days ago, our great-nephew Timothy celebrated his 12th birthday at home with his family. Today, there will be a second party at our house to honor him. I think the children have decided that every birthday must include some sort of celebration at our house, and that suits us just fine! Greg and I never gave birth to children of our own. As my mother liked to say, “God had other plans.” In part, we can see that these plans included time and room in our hearts to love and nurture the children of others…especially Jasmine and her children – Timothy, Zola and Nathan. And we truly marvel at His artistry as we watch our children grow and flourish. More than once, we have felt like God put these little beings into our lives to remind us that He is large and in charge…and always meeting us right where we are.

In the last week or so, I have shared in the bittersweet mix of joy and sadness of friends whose children are graduating from high school…finishing this chapter called “childhood” and stepping out into the big wide world. In a few short years, our children will be right there with them. You may be thinking, “She acts like she’s the only person with amazing children.” Truly, I understand how precious each child is to his/her “people.” More importantly, I know how precious each child is to God…so special that He made a way for each one to breathe even in the womb.

I have questions. I know you do, too. Today, let’s stop and take a collective breath and recognize that God has answers! After all, this scripture reminds us that “He created everything.” Spend some time with God. Tell Him how grateful you are for His plans for your life and how He knits everything together perfectly. Pour out your heart to Him and tell Him all that you are thinking and feeling. Then sit back and let His answers, love and care wash over you.

We cannot explain what God does…and He doesn’t expect this! It’s time to appreciate that God created everything – and trust that He’s got us all in the palm of His hand. In our house today, we will celebrate the life of a 12-year-old and his siblings, who fill our heart with joy and purpose. As we thank God for all His creations…we will marvel at His artistry, love and care. My prayer is that you would also take a few minutes to contemplate God’s presence in your life – and give Him praise and gratitude – for everything.

Daily Devotional for November 25, 2020 – God is still at work…give thanks for the happy news of peace and salvation!

Isaiah 52:7
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who bring the happy news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns.

We have had two or three periods of rain and wind lately that pretty well decimated our fall leaves and “color”. But yesterday – and again this morning – we noticed that several trees (we think they are Red Oaks) are clinging to bright yellow leaves in their tops. As we’ve looked out across the mountain and valleys, we have seen the sun dance atop these bright yellow patches and offer sunny glimmers of cheer and happiness. It’s as if God is saying, “I’m still at work!”

In the last 12 hours, I’ve learned of more cases of COVID-19 that remind me that this virus is spreading with a vengeance. I know many people who will not be participating in a traditional “Thanksgiving dinner”…and a case where more than one family member is in an ICU on a ventilator with this horrific illness. Nothing about this holiday will be “normal” for most of us.

And yet, I am writing this from the warmth and comfort of our cozy home. Thanks to an early-morning grocery pickup, our pantry, fridge and freezer are fully stocked. Though our “number” has dwindled this month, every remaining member of my immediate family is relatively healthy and well today. We may not gather around a table tomorrow to eat turkey and the trimmings, but we have ample reasons to give thanks. We have God’s happy news of peace and salvation…and the shimmering yellow leaves on the mountainside are reminding me of this!

How beautiful indeed is the news that the God of Israel reigns! We still have much for which we can give thanks. God’s peace and salvation are not dependent upon holiday celebrations or “fall color”. The LORD is my shepherd…I have everything I need. This is my prayer for you today, as well.
