Daily Devotional for August 6, 2022 – It’s time to grow up and live what we preach…and always share the love and truth of Jesus

August 6 ~ Ephesians 4:14-16
We must stop acting like children. We must not let deceitful people trick us by their false teachings, which are like winds that toss us around from place to place. Love should always make us tell the truth. Then we will grow in every way and be more like Christ, the head of the body. Christ holds it together and makes all of its parts work perfectly, as it grows and becomes strong because of love.

“There is nothing to be against…just keep concentrating on the BIG THING you are for!” – Richard Rohr, Center for Action and Contemplation

Richard Rohr, a Franciscan friar, ecumenical teacher, and author often cites the writings of St. Francis of Assisi. Like many others, he attributes a quote to St. Francis that says, “Preach the Gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.” This is a lovely sentiment; however, some fact checking indicates that the closest St. Francis got to saying this was…“No brother should preach contrary to the form and regulations of the holy Church nor unless he has been permitted by his minister …All the Friars … should preach by their deeds.

I read about these Friars and the quotes today in an editorial opinion on the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette “Religion” pages. The writer, Paul Prather, pastor of Bethesda Church in Sterling, KY, cites Rohr and his work as he talks about how we are to be continually striving to demonstrate the love and truths of Christ Jesus in our daily living. He points out that St. Francis of Assisi did not get bogged down in the dogma and “laws” of certain churches or religious leaders. He simply tried to emulate Jesus. And so should we.

One of the most poignant thoughts of Prather’s essay was the suggestion that Christians should not be obsessed with all the things they are against. Isn’t that where we seem to be these days? Those who are against certain people or groups are raising their hands to the sky (or their fists) and declaring they will create a “church” that is “pure.” Those who wish to discriminate, disparage, and declare themselves to be more devout and dutiful than the next guy clearly demonstrate otherwise.

In Galatians 3:28-29, Paul tells us that…“Faith in Christ Jesus is what makes each of you equal with each other, whether you are a Jew or a Greek, a slave or a free person, a man or a woman. So if you belong to Christ, you are now part of Abraham’s family, and you will be given what God has promised.” I’m honestly not sure what part of this passage so many “Christians” missed! The love and fellowship of Jesus Christ is offered equally to everyone!

Regardless of who said it – or how it was said, I really like the admonition to “Preach the Gospel at all times, and use words when necessary.” I am also drawn to the idea that we start living in a way that shows others all the things that Jesus is for, rather than rail about what we are against. As the old hymn says, “They will know us by our Love.” What – and WHO are you showing the world these days? It is time for us to grow up – and shift our attitudes and actions. It is time to be about the Big Thing we are for and share the love and truth of Jesus to all people – in all things. Alleluia!

Live What You Preach So You Don’t Have to Preach

Daily Devotional for June 13, 2022 – Enduring to the end…are you ready to stand up for the truths of Jesus?

Matthew 24:1-14
As Jesus was leaving the Temple grounds, his disciples came along and wanted to take him on a tour of the various Temple buildings.

But he told them, “All these buildings will be knocked down, with not one stone left on top of another!”

“When will this happen?” the disciples asked him later, as he sat on the slopes of the Mount of Olives. “What events will signal your return and the end of the world?”

Jesus told them, “Don’t let anyone fool you. For many will come claiming to be the Messiah and will lead many astray. When you hear of wars beginning, this does not signal my return; these must come, but the end is not yet. The nations and kingdoms of the earth will rise against each other, and there will be famines and earthquakes in many places. But all this will be only the beginning of the horrors to come.

“Then you will be tortured and killed and hated all over the world because you are mine, and many of you shall fall back into sin and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and lead many astray. Sin will be rampant everywhere and will cool the love of many. But those enduring to the end shall be saved.

“And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it, and then, finally, the end will come.

Throughout our lives, there will be situations where people want us to look the other way…or to believe that we didn’t see something that was as plain as the nose on our face. And sometimes, telling the truth will be difficult. One instance that comes to mind for me would be reporting the suspected child abuse of one of my students. As a teacher, I was bound by law to do this – and it was supposed to be anonymous. But you didn’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that when authorities came knocking to investigate such claims, a teacher likely sent them. Given the evidence and circumstances – and the recollection of how angry this child’s mother was after a visit from authorities – I would do this again today.

Many have suffered for their honesty. Friendships and family relationships have been permanently damaged or ruined. People have lost their jobs over refusals to lie and cover for bosses and co-workers. Citizens have experienced physical abuse and the destruction of property for expressing support for people in one group or another – or for professing a particular political allegiance. And Christians have been persecuted for following Jesus and encouraging others to embrace His gift of salvation and His command to “Love one another.” We see examples of all these scenarios in our world today.

Pay close attention to Jesus’ words in this passage. He notes that the end will come when all have heard the Good News. I don’t know when this day will arrive. I don’t see it happening soon…but at the same time, I’m ready – are you? The more critical statement to me is this one… “those enduring to the end shall be saved.” Are you enduring to the end? Are you standing up and speaking out for Jesus? Are you encouraging others to love Him with their whole heart…and to love all others with the love of Christ Jesus?

Jesus is calling us to stay awake and alert…to know who is speaking to us, and to recognize false prophets and leaders when they appear. Jesus is calling on us to always operate in His truths. As I have said many times, no one ever claimed it would be easy to follow Jesus…but our faithful obedience to Him and His teachings is critical – for His Kingdom and our place in it. Everything in this world is temporary, but the love of Christ is eternal. Where are you placing your faith? Make the truth and teachings of Jesus your truth…and be ever ready to meet Him in person. Alleluia!

Daily Devotional for May 25, 2022 – Sticking with Jesus and finding His truths…where do we go from here?

John 8:31-32
Then Jesus turned to the Jews who had claimed to believe in him. “If you stick with this, living out what I tell you, you are my disciples for sure. Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you.”

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

As I took my walk yesterday morning, I listened to Contemporary Christian music and prayed. I thanked God for all the many blessings in my life – specific people, good health, safety and freedom – and much more. I asked God to care for my family, friends, and those who are sick and grieving, to be near to the brokenhearted, and for His will to prevail. Nearly an hour later, I came home feeling the peaceful-yet-powerful presence of God…confident that I had left everything securely in His hands, where He would handle everything perfectly.

Just a few hours later, the world changed forever. News reporters began to tell us of another horrific shooting…this time in Uvalde, Texas, at an elementary school for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. The reports were ugly, hurtful, and frightening. Ultimately, 19 school children and 2 adults were dead – including the 4th-grade teacher of the children who were murdered. Approximately 15 more people were treated for injuries and released from area hospitals.

Sadly, we’ve been here before. As a former first-grade teacher, I remember the horror of the shooting at Sandy Hook ten years ago, where 28 people (mostly first-graders) died – and 2 more were injured. I remember thinking about my own “babies” (which is how I thought of my students) – and what I would have done to protect them in such a situation if I had a chance. I thought of six years ago when Timothy was in 2nd grade, and I volunteered a few days a week in his classroom. One of the first things the teacher did was show me a bar that fit into the entry door of the classroom to lock it from intruders. This was a shocking thought to me…never in my 9 years of public school teaching did I think I would have to secure my classroom and protect my students from an active shooter!

I thought all afternoon about our own children…especially our nieces and nephews. One of our great-nieces celebrated her 8th birthday yesterday. She will enter 3rd grade this fall. One of our nephews will be in 4th grade, and we have numerous family members – and children who are like family – that will enter these elementary grades in the fall. I thought of the 2nd and 3rd-graders I taught in Sunday school until the pandemic struck…and of the dozens of children that have crossed my path in recent years through VBS, Sunday school, children’s choir and more. And I could not wrap my brain around the concept of something terrible happening to any of them, let alone being shot by an 18-year-old boy.

I prayed through tears…and I asked God to bring peace and resolution where I have none. I asked Him to fix whatever is so wrong with us that we think guns solve our problems and represent the answer – to anything. I basically walked around in stunned, tearful silence and simply asked, “Come, Lord Jesus.”

This situation is far beyond my “pay grade.” Yes, there are things I can do. I can participate in efforts to support these grieving families. I can advocate for tougher gun laws, “red flag” legislation, and more mental health support in this country. I realize that you may completely disagree with me about how to handle the gun issue in our nation. But there is one thing that I hope you and I can agree on…we must keep seeking Jesus’ truth and living in it. We cannot give up on God…not even now when we have so many questions and feel so hollow – and maybe even a little deserted. We have to throw back our shoulders and work even harder to share the light and love of Christ Jesus with this dark world.

I heard an interview yesterday with the parent of a victim of the Parkland shooting in Florida, just four years ago. The reporter asked him what advice he would offer for the days ahead. One of the things he said was to get up today and get going. LITERALLY, he said to get out of bed and face the day. His point was that even though we feel despondent and heartbroken – even angry – we cannot be defeated by this. God is still with us. The love of Jesus is still freely offered to any and all who will embrace Him. We still have missions and ministries to complete. They just took an ugly and heartbreaking detour yesterday. All the same, we followers of Jesus have a lot of work to do…and we don’t have a minute to waste.

Today, as you ponder all that has happened – and the ugly news that will surely continue to unfold, ask Jesus to remind you of His truths. Call on Him to show you how to proceed. Ask Him for strength and courage to put one foot in front of the other and do the hard things that may be asked of you. Pray for peace and comfort as you seek purpose and direction. And take a little time to thank Jesus for His unending love and care. His heart is broken, and His arms are open to embrace anyone who will run to Him and seek His solace and assurance – now, and in the days ahead. I know that’s where I will be…won’t you join me?

Daily Devotional for May 5, 2021 – Remember to say “please and thank you”!

Colossians 4:2-4
Don’t be weary in prayer; keep at it; watch for God’s answers, and remember to be thankful when they come. Don’t forget to pray for us too, that God will give us many chances to preach the Good News of Christ for which I am here in jail. Pray that I will be bold enough to tell it freely and fully and make it plain, as, of course, I should.

From the time they were able to talk, our niece has taught her children to say “Please, and thank you.” I am proud to say that these phrases generally come rather naturally to each of them today. They are truly gracious children. As adults, you and I spend a lot of time reminding children with a “What do you say?” prompt. And that is what Paul is offering to Christians here…”Keep praying, and remember to be thankful.” We need to get to a point where our gratitude for answered prayers is immediate – and second nature. Better yet, let’s be thankful for answers that have not even materialized. Let’s include a hefty dose of gratitude and thanks in each and every prayer we offer to God.

Additionally, Paul asks for prayers that he would be bold and truthful in his witness. This has become my prayer of late with regard to fellow believers and my church family. My petition of God is that all motives would be pure…that all witness would reflect the teachings of Jesus. I pray that there will be no greed, selfishness, or desire for personal exaltation. I pray against the words and actions of those who claim the name of Jesus while pursuing their own particular agendas and desires, and I humbly ask God to convict them of the need to change course.

Finally, I ask God to put agents and angels in the lives of others…to present them with witnesses and opportunities to experience the truth of the Good News of Jesus – and to embrace this for themselves. I ask Him to make all of us genuine, humble examples of Jesus’ teachings…loving, inclusive, peaceful disciples who speak and act in such a way that others say, “I want what he/she has!” in the best of ways.

The advice we give to children is good advice for us as Christians…”Always say ‘please and thank you’.” My prayer is that you and I will pray often – with gratitude – and that we will demonstrate genuine, faithful obedience to Christ toward all we encounter. People are watching…be sure you are freely and fully showing them the plain truth of Jesus…and living with gratitude and praise for His unending love, care and blessings.

Daily Devotional for January 8, 2019 – God’s truth – or pious nitpicking…Who do others believe you serve?

2 Timothy 2:14-17a
Repeat these basic essentials over and over to God’s people. Warn them before God against pious nitpicking, which chips away at the faith. It just wears everyone out. Concentrate on doing your best for God, work you won’t be ashamed of, laying out the truth plain and simple. Stay clear of pious talk that is only talk. Words are not mere words, you know. If they’re not backed by a godly life, they accumulate as poison in the soul.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

Once again, I have seen comments on Facebook today that are vile and hateful – and came from fellow “Christians”. The ugly talk about what these people would do to some who are “different” in one way or another…how they would “make an example” that would deter others and other sickening statements not only make me angry – they break my heart. I cannot imagine how they must make God feel.

I looked at this scripture passage and asked myself, “What is wrong with these people? How can they fail to “connect the dots” between their ugly, hateful words and the poison of sin?  How can they possibly justify speaking and thinking in such a manner while claiming to love Jesus Christ with all their heart, mind and soul? How can they desire to serve the One who loved unconditionally, while spewing venom and loathing toward another person or group of people?

These are not isolated incidents…the people to whom I’ve referred do this over and over – and seem to almost delight in doing so. I have to imagine that God is greatly grieved by their misdeeds…and the arrogance that accompanies them. And yes, this behavior does wear everyone out and chip away at the faith of some.  At the very least, it sends the wrong message to those in our midst…a notion that it is okay to claim the name of Jesus Christ AND practice “pious nitpicking” – and worse – at the same time.

Here we go again, but people.are.watching. Everything from your words to your actions – to even your body language – tells others who you are and Who you serve. You can claim all day long to serve Jesus and be a redeemed Believer. But if your minute-to-minute living does not reflect the love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and inclusion of Jesus Christ, you’re just polluting the atmosphere and delighting the devil. Who among us wants this?

My prayer is that we would each take a pause to breathe deeply, check our behavior, and ask God to fill us with His Holy Spirit. Call on the Lord to equip you to do your best work, in plain truth, with no added agendas or an inflated sense of importance and an ability (and authority) to judge others. Humbly walk in the truths of Christ…and trust that He is more than able to multiply your efforts. It’s time to “walk the Walk and talk the Talk”…every single minute.  Are you with me?

Daily Devotional for January 7, 2019 – Making good use of God’s kindness…and always doing what’s right

2 Corinthians 6:1-7
We work together with God, and we beg you to make good use of God’s kindness to you. In the Scriptures God says,

“When the time came, I listened to you, and when you needed help, I came to save you.”

That time has come. This is the day for you to be saved.

We don’t want anyone to find fault with our work, and so we try hard not to cause problems. But in everything and in every way we show that we truly are God’s servants. We have always been patient, though we have had a lot of trouble, suffering, and hard times. We have been beaten, put in jail, and hurt in riots. We have worked hard and have gone without sleep or food. But we have kept ourselves pure and have been understanding, patient, and kind. The Holy Spirit has been with us, and our love has been real. We have spoken the truth, and God’s power has worked in us. In all our struggles we have said and done only what is right.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

I don’t know about you, but a lot of the conversations I find myself engaged in lately center on one question…”How on earth did we get to this point?”  A lot of people want to place blame…to say “It started with This One…or That One.”  We try to look back and try to determine “when the tide turned” and the world became uglier, more dishonest, less polite and respectful…and in many cases, downright vulgar. If we are truthful, we will admit that there is plenty of blame to go around.

But here’s the thing…as I read this scripture passage and Paul’s message to the people of Corinth, I was struck by a particular consideration…at the end of the day, you and I are not responsible for anyone else’s words or actions. We should be completely and totally concerned with our own behavior. If we are doing what we know pleases God, we have nothing to worry about – no “accounting” is needed. If we are serving Christ with every fiber of our being…demonstrating His teachings and showing others His love, kindness, respect, grace and mercy…our conscience is clean, and our example is one that pleases Jesus.

I suspect that a lot of folks know that what they are saying and doing is not always truthful – or “right”.  I have a feeling that many people follow the crowd and go along with ideas and activities that they know displease God because they simply have not taken the leap of faith to trust God if they “jump ship”.

I will tell you from personal experience that it is not easy to take an unpopular stand. There have been plenty of times when I have had to distance myself from those who were expressing views that I knew in my heart were not Godly. There have been times when others have “taken me to task” for my stance…and even times when some have mocked me or belittled my words and actions. You may have experienced the same in your own life.  Paul never claimed that doing the right thing and living in Christ’s teachings would be a cake walk!

My challenge to each of us today is to check our thoughts, words and actions.  Are we doing what is right in God’s eyes?  Are we speaking the truth and letting the Holy Spirit guide us?  Or are we getting caught up in the thought, words and actions of others…and letting their behavior and opinion influence ours?

Spend some time in prayer and meditation and let God show you where you may be taking the wrong path. Ask Him to point out where you might have demonstrated dishonesty or operated unkindly or unfairly in any situation or circumstance. Make sure that your thoughts, words and actions honor, glorify and please God. If we all do this, our missions and ministries will surely make a difference for God’s Kingdom. Isn’t this our true purpose as disciples of Christ?  Don’t you think it should be?

Daily Devotional for October 11, 2018 – Exercising your “faith muscle”…and showing others the results

1 Timothy 4:8-12
Bodily exercise is all right, but spiritual exercise is much more important and is a tonic for all you do. So exercise yourself spiritually, and practice being a better Christian because that will help you not only now in this life, but in the next life too. This is the truth and everyone should accept it. We work hard and suffer much in order that people will believe it, for our hope is in the living God who died for all, and particularly for those who have accepted his salvation.

Teach these things and make sure everyone learns them well. Don’t let anyone think little of you because you are young. Be their ideal; let them follow the way you teach and live; be a pattern for them in your love, your faith, and your clean thoughts.

Lately, I have become genuinely concerned about some of my friends who are not handling challenges and disappointments well. I see them growing angry, increasingly frustrated, and totally despondent. And I completely understand their angst and concern. I think most of us have a time when we would like to shut out the world, crawl in a hole, and just wallow in our sadness and dissatisfaction. But as Christians, we cannot do this…and the Apostle Paul explains this in these verses from 1 Timothy 4.

I was particularly struck by the sentence that says, “We work hard and suffer much in order that people will believe it [the truth of Christ’s teachings].” Paul reminds us that people are watching to see how we will act – and react. They will notice – and remember – that in times of great challenge, we remained faithful and positive. People will recall how we graciously accepted defeat – not because we are weak, but because we put our trust in something bigger and higher than mortal men and the things of this world.

People will check us out to see if we resort to name calling, foul language and bad behavior when “the chips are down”.  And when we get it right and remain steady and obedient in our demonstration of Christ’s teachings, they will take this in and hopefully apply our example to their own lives. When others see someone who can keep trusting and believing – and loving and living, even in the midst of disappointments and challenges – they are likely to want in on this. Hopefully, they will want to experience the power and confidence of Christ’s presence and guidance in their own lives.

So keep exercising your “faith muscle”…especially on the hard days. Trust Jesus and believe that He is in complete control…that God’s perfect plan will ultimately be manifested.  Keep demonstrating joy and confidence as you call on the Holy Spirit to guide you through every minute of each day. Be the example of Christ’s truth that others need to see. Our hope IS in the living God who died for all…and others are watching to see how we live in it! Are you ready to show them?
